Ulster University

Coleraine, UK 🇬🇧

Role:  Research Associate in Environmental Science

Department: School of Geography and Environmental Sciences

Grade: 6/7 (£32,314 – £41,443 per annum)

Responsible to:  Principal Investigator

Campus: Coleraine

(Fixed-Term until 31st January 2026 / Full-Time)

Job Purpose:

Ulster University is working with fourteen institutions in three jurisdictions on the large-scale Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water project. The project is jointly funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development in Northern Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, and UK Research and Innovation.

We require a post-doctoral scientist to undertake research as part of a Monitoring and Modelling Platform in the Co-Centre, investigating the effectiveness of nature based solutions to improve water quality in two settings. First, forest-to-bog restoration using cell-bunding and other techniques require data to understand the effects on dissolved organic carbon production and retention. Second, data is required to investigate the extent that short-rotation-willow stands can attenuate nutrients following waste-water irrigation.  The successful candidate will therefore have practical field and laboratory experience relating to environmental science/hydrology/hydrochemistry related subjects and ideally related to water quality monitoring and experimental work.

Another important part of the role will be on education and engagement with the wide range of stakeholders concerned with water quality. Furthermore, the candidate should have experience of managing data, and providing data analysis and interpretation at engagement events, and in presentations, scientific reports and publications.
