Job Description
The Earth Systems Science Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is currently seeking a Hydrologist to join its Risk and Environmental Assessment (REA) Group. The individual will contribute to and potentially lead multidisciplinary teams of subject matter experts to analyze environmental impacts from various actions to satisfy regulatory requirements.

This position requires knowledge and experience related to surface and groundwater hydrology, including:
-
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) planning and implementation.
-
Hydrologic (surface water and groundwater) environmental and/or safety impact assessments (e.g., water quality and water availability) and water resources assessments.
-
Hydrologic modeling, e.g.,
-
Watershed flow and water quality modeling,
-
Groundwater flow and transport modeling,
-
Probabilistic flood hazard analysis.
-
Stakeholder engagement.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
-
Contribute to and lead the development of proposals, technical reports, white papers, and technical presentations.

Define and lead project work for small tasks/projects.
-
Publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals.
-
Present research efforts and technical work products at national forums.
-
Contribute to business development opportunities.
-
Develop and maintain an internal and external professional network.
-
Mentor and train junior staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/BA with 2 years of experience; MS/MA with 0 – 2 years of experience; PhD with 0 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications
-
BS/BA with 5 years of experience; MS/MA with 3 years of experience; PhD with 1 year of experience

Master’s or PhD in hydrology, engineering, or related field preferred.

Demonstrated expertise with NEPA reviews and other related policies and regulations.

Expertise in hydrologic modeling, as demonstrated by the development and application of:
-
Hydrologic, hydraulic, and surface water quality/transport models (e.g., those developed by US Army Corps and EPA)
-
2-D and 3-D hydrodynamic models (e.g., overland surface flow and coastal hydrodynamics)
-
Groundwater flow and transport models (e.g., MODFLOW, MT3DMS, GMS)
-
Strong verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated record of publications in peer reviewed journals and/or customer interactions and stakeholder engagement.
