Role

Are you motivated to help deliver the province’s water policy priorities in a challenging and exciting setting? This 12 month mid-level professional position coordinates the development of robust and integrated water policy across the Government of Alberta. The position works across the department, the government of Alberta, other governments, and stakeholder organizations in the development and evaluation of water policy through the various dimensions of the policy cycle, including research, design, control, evaluation and education. The position considers the broad strategic direction and priorities of the department, the government of Alberta, and other levels of government, with respect to social, economic and environmental outcomes that impact aquatic ecosystems from an integrated water quantity and water quality perspective. 

In this position you will:
•    Develop and implement policy solutions that consider various aspects of the surface water/groundwater/wetlands environment, as well as linkages to terrestrial systems and climate change; balance environmental, economic and social considerations; and consider a broad range of stakeholder and other ministry perspectives.
•    Determine the most effective ways to engage and solicit feedback from internal, cross ministry and external stakeholders to inform policy development, while considering format, timing and current affairs.
•    Prepare briefings for various levels of executive management and government officials, outlining stakeholder perspectives, policy analysis, options and recommendations.
•    Respond to inquiries and concerns from stakeholders and the general public regarding water policy and management issues, through direct verbal/written communication or drafting of correspondence for government representatives.

Qualifications

•    A University degree in environmental studies/sciences, environmental management, or environmental policy, with a strong focus on one or more areas of water management, public policy, hydrology or a related field, combined with a minimum of two years related experience.

Assets:
•    Experience developing policy or regulation in a government setting
•    Experience developing decision and communication documents (e.g. briefing notes, Ministerial Reports)
•    Sound understanding of policy and management practices to protect and manage water and wetland resources.
•    Sound knowledge and understanding of Alberta’s relevant legislation, regulation and policies, including the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, the Water Act, and the Alberta Land Stewardship Act. 
•    Good understanding of wetland management issues and/or water adaptation/resiliency approaches to address climate change challenges. 
•    Strong writing, communication and strategic thinking skills.

Salary

$2,613.91  to $3,428.61  bi-weekly ($68,223 to $89,486 annually)

Hours of work:
7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week 

Term of Employment:
This is a fulltime, temporary position for up to 12 months
