The European institutions are looking for scientific research administrators. Recruited officials (grade AD 7) will work mainly for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Most posts will be in various JRC sites (Brussels, BelgiumGeel, BelgiumKarlsruhe, GermanySeville, SpainIspra, Italy; and Petten, The Netherlands).

We offer opportunities to candidates who specialize in ten different fields, as listed below. Please note that you may only apply for one field.

Do you have what it takes?

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an EU national and enjoy the full rights of an EU citizen.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of one official EU language and a satisfactory knowledge of a different official EU language.
  • Educational and Professional Experience:
    • Completed university studies of at least three years, attested by a diploma.
    • Seven years of relevant professional experience, with specific requirements varying by field.

and

  • Have a scientific publication record with at least two peer-reviewed publications.

Field-Specific Qualifications

1. Environmental and climate sciences, engineering, and economics

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: agricultural sciences; architecture; biochemistry; biology; biological sciences; chemistry; computer sciences; ecology; economics; engineering; environmental sciences; forestry; geography; geology; hydrological sciences; life sciences; materials science; mathematics; meteorology; natural sciences; nutritional sciences; oceanography or marine sciences; physics; social sciences and humanities; soil sciences; statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: environmental monitoring and modelling; biodiversity and ecosystem services; regulatory standards and methodologies; pollution impacts and control; sustainable land use and conservation of natural resources; circular economy and sustainability; assessment of impacts on environment; building and infrastructure sustainability; supply chain and procurement; policy development and evaluation. 

2. Energy science and sustainability

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: agricultural sciences; architecture; biochemistry; biology; chemistry; computer sciences; ecology; economics; engineering; environmental sciences; forestry; geography; geology; hydrological sciences; life sciences; materials science; mathematics; meteorology; nanotechnology; natural sciences; nuclear sciences; oceanography or marine sciences; physics; political sciences; psychology; social sciences and humanities; statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: renewable energy research; energy consumption and efficiency; building sustainability; energy integration; environmental impact; energy storage and conversion; transition to sustainable systems; energy market analysis; policy development and evaluation; nuclear energy research. 

3. ICT and (cyber)security

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: computer sciences; engineering; materials science; mathematics; natural sciences; physics; political sciences; psychology; social sciences and humanities; statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: cybersecurity strategies; infrastructure security; threat intelligence; (cyber)security resilience; emerging technologies; communication networks; data protection; artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering; cryptography and standardisation; policy impact analysis.

4. Data analysis, research, and applications for evidence-based decision-making

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: actuarial sciences; architecture; banking and finance; biochemistry; biology; chemistry; computer sciences; econometrics; economics; engineering; geography; mathematics; meteorology; natural sciences; political sciences; physics; social sciences and humanities; statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: data science and engineering; AI and machine learning; text analysis; data processing; evidence-based policymaking; data linking; data exploration and visualisation; data quality; policy evaluation; collaboration and foresight.

5. Research and applications in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and complex systems

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: agricultural sciences; biochemistry; biology; chemistry; computer sciences; ecology; economics; engineering; environmental sciences; hydrological sciences; life sciences; mathematics; meteorology; natural sciences; oceanography or marine sciences; physics; psychology; social sciences and humanities; statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: data science and AI; AI applications; algorithmic systems; AI ethics and oversight; generative AI; AI-driven innovation; AI risk analysis; big data management; machine learning operations; complex systems.

6. Space applications and geo-information technologies

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: sustainable transportation solutions; environmental impact assessment; vehicle evaluation; transportation models and simulations; urban mobility research; transportation infrastructure analysis; structural safety assessment; policy recommendations and guidance; new technologies assessment; drone-related studies.

9. Social, economic, and political sciences

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: actuarial sciences; architecture; banking and finance; computer sciences; economics; educational sciences; engineering; futures studies; geography; management of innovation; mathematics; physics; political sciences; psychology; science and technology studies; service design; social sciences and humanities; statistics; sustainability transitions management.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: societal trends analysis; political and governance research; policy impact assessment; foresight methods; survey methodology; policy recommendations; collaboration; communication and management; economic and financial modelling; security and sociotechnical research.

10. Behavioural science, economics, and education

The diploma can be in one or more of the following scientific domains: economics; educational sciences; political sciences; psychology; social sciences and humanities, statistics.

The professional experience must be acquired in one or more of the following areas: education research; behavioural analysis; experimental and quasi-experimental designs; communication and collaboration; policy design and implementation; data analysis; statistical and econometric methods; writing and reporting; training and teaching; team and project management.

24 official EU languages for testing

Candidates can freely select any two of the 24 official EU languages for testing

Once on a reserve list, successful candidates may be contacted by the recruiting services of the EU institutions and bodies interested in their profile, for targeted recruitment interviews. Such interviews, and any other related procedures, are outside the selection process conducted by EPSO. Recruitment interviews are conducted by the relevant recruiting services usually in English and/or French. Other languages may also be used during the interviews, based on the needs of the recruiting services and the knowledge expressed by candidates in their applications.
