General FunctionThis position is only available to current, regular, full-time employees of Missouri State University.The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.
Description of Primary Duties12-month appointment, initial 5-year appointment with annual reviewEnsure high standards of achievement, integrity and ethics for students, faculty and staffPromote faculty/student research, teaching, grantsmanship, and publication activityEnsure an active commitment to inclusive excellenceFacilitate effective communicationLead recruitment/retention of studentsRecruit and mentor faculty and staffEvaluate and recommend faculty for retention, tenure, promotion, salary adjustment, leave and awardsAdminister all academic programs (undergraduate and master’s level) of the School including scheduling, program review, assessment and accreditationTeach in the disciplineMaintain ties with alumni and communitySupervise support personnel and manage the School’s space and facilitiesPlan and administer the School’s budgetsPromote fundraising for the School in consultation with the Dean, and other duties as needed.
Minimum Acceptable QualificationsThe minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of school director are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. These include: possession of a terminal degree; at least three years of successful teaching, research and service experience; evidence of leadership experience; and a demonstrated commitment to Missouri State University’s inclusive excellence principles.
Additional QualificationsCandidates must present credentials including a PhD in geography, geology, planning, geospatial sciences, or a closely related fieldMust have a record of excellence in teaching, research and service sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured full or associate professor in the School of Earth, Environment and Sustainability.Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skillsMust have excellent organizational skills and demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and studentsMust have outstanding written and oral communication skills, and a leadership style that is visionary and collaborativeOutstanding candidates will also have a familiarity with national trends in general education, teacher education, and both graduate and undergraduate education in geography, geology, planning and geospatial sciencesWill have experience with developing student learning outcomes and comprehensive assessment plans for all degree programs, and a record of participation in outreach activitiesLeadership that will champion the efforts to build a stronger and more prominent School at all levels and in all areas within itDemonstrated leadership experience is preferred
