Location: Preference will be given to applicants who live in British Columbia and specifically in the Columbia Basin where many of our projects are currently located. Our head office is located in Nelson, BC where the majority of our staff work. Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to periodically visit the office for meetings.
Hours: 32-40 hours per week.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will be responsible for directing and managing the activities of Living Lakes Canada (LLC) in accordance with policies, goals, and objectives established by the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Deputy Director will ensure the achievement of short- and long-range goals for operations, human resources, financial performance, communications, public relations and growth, and oversee fundraising within the organization to ensure financial health. The Deputy Director will be responsible for promoting LLC’s vision and mission, fostering a culture of collegiality, collaboration, mentorship and learning, and being an effective communicator on behalf of the organization and its programs. 


  • Monitors the day-to-day running of LLC’s programs and projects to ensure they are managed effectively and efficiently and that all contractual obligations are fulfilled.
  • Liaises with Executive Director to report on operational activities and set or review strategic goals
  • Effectively communicates to the Team, conducts meaningful Team Meetings, and clearly outlines to the Team any changes to strategic goals.
  • Guides, supports and reviews staff and contractor execution of reports on annual operational plans and key performance indicators.
  • Develops strong relationships with existing and new funding partners in addition to the overseeing of researching, writing, and submitting funding proposals and reports.
  • Oversees implementation of a fundraising plan, sourcing of funds and the allocation of fiscal and material resources.
  • Tracks all grant deadlines and manages and supports each Program Manager in applying for grants.
  • Supports the management of all human resources including the recruitment, hiring, termination, supervision, training, development, evaluations and compensation of staff and contractors.
  • Implements progressive and fiscally sound policies and procedures; This will be done in collaboration with the Director of Administration and Accountant of the organization.

An undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field such as environmental studies, politics, public policy, business administration or communications and a minimum of 5 years of leadership roles within a not-for-profit organization, or an equivalent of education, training and experience.
Preference will be given to applicants with a background or experience in the environmental sector.
