Job Summary

Join a mission-driven team in the Source Water Protection (SWP) Unit of the Minnesota Department of Health and contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans. In the Watershed Data Specialist role, you will provide overall support for the Groundwater Restoration and Protection Strategies (GRAPS) workgroup and Drinking Water Protection Section by performing spatial data analysis using GIS, archiving program data, contributing to the creation of reports through technical writing and review, and providing technical assistance and data management. 

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the Groundwater Restoration and Protection Strategies (GRAPS) program by assisting SWP hydrologists and planning staff to access, enter, edit, compile, and archive spatial and program data.
  • Performing often complex GIS analysis to evaluate public health risk, considering factors such as land use, geologic and hydrologic setting, and contaminant use history.
  • Responding to other internal and external requests for GIS technical assistance, including creating maps for special projects or requests from other programs within Drinking Water Protection).
  • Assisting with developing tools to measure SWP progress tracking, and summarizing source water protection efforts to meet state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Assisting with accessing, updating, editing, and archiving data sets provided by local, state, and federal agencies to support source water protection efforts.

This position will have the option of teleworking; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience working with hydrogeology, or related, data, and experience with spatial data analysis.

An Associate’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, physical geography, environmental science, natural resources or equivalent may substitute for 6 months of experience; A Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, physical geography, environmental science, natural resources or equivalent may substitute for 12 months of experience and a Master’s Degree in geology, hydrogeology, physical geography, environmental science, natural resources or equivalent may substitute for 18 months of experience. 

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of hydrology, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry, water quality, public health, and well construction principles. 
  • Proven ability in working with databases, hydrogeologic data, and spatial information.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, physical geography, environmental science, natural resources or equivalent.
  • Experience in managing and analyzing GIS data, with expertise in ArcGIS software, particularly ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with spatial and tabular data reporting and communication tools.
  • Experience with global positioning systems (GPS) locational data.
