What We’re Looking For: The DATCP’s Division of Agricultural Resource Management is recruiting for a Groundwater Specialist (Hydrogeologist-Advanced) to fill an employment opportunity with the Bureau of Agrichemical Management.
This position is located at the Prairie Oaks State Office Building situated on Madison’s southeast side and nestled atop a beautifully wooded and scenic hilltop venue. Telecommuting Option: This position may have the ability to telecommute up to 6 days per 2-week pay period! An approved telecommuting agreement is required before an employee may telecommute. Approval of the employee’s telecommuting agreement and work schedule will vary based on the operational needs of the Division. All DATCP employees who telecommute are required to live in Wisconsin.

Position Summary
The primary responsibility for this position is to serve as a statewide specialist responsible for management of groundwater and surface water monitoring programs to evaluate non-point impacts of agrichemicals. Key responsibilities will include design, planning, organization, coordination, and implementation of departmental and inter-agency annual groundwater and surface water monitoring programs and periodic statewide sampling surveys. The position will require data collection and analysis, review and evaluation of complex technical studies related to groundwater and surface water quality impacts from routine use of agrichemicals. As the program hydrogeologist, the position will also require review and development of statewide management strategies related to agrichemical use to protect groundwater and surface water, and to provide technical direction on the toxicological and environmental impacts related to the use of agrichemicals.
This position also conducts investigations at locations where agrichemical contamination of groundwater or surface water is found; install and sample monitoring wells, lead complex investigations to determine possible causes, assess local environmental conditions, coordinate and implement appropriate response actions, including regulatory or enforcement actions or remedial activities.
This position will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with state and federal agencies, and represent the department on various councils, committees, and associations, and serves as a liaison for the department between federal, state and local agencies to assist with development of statewide policy recommendations, administrative rules, and orders related to the management of groundwater and surface water resources.

Salary Information
The classification for this position is Hydrogeologist-Adv which is in schedule-range 15-04 with starting pay between $37.00 – $39.00 per hour based on qualifications. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan at the time of hire. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid WI driver’s license or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes is required.
Regular in-state travel of approximately 10% of the time with occasional overnight stays, is required.
Must be able to carry and use field equipment and traverse areas on farms and other sites where no special access provisions are available.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:
- Experience with groundwater and surface water monitoring systems, such as study design, site characterization, monitoring well installation, sampling, and/or data analysis, etc.
- Experience with data evaluation, progress reporting, and preparation of technical reports to summarize study results.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software or similar, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:
- Experience with project or program management.
- Training and/or experience with migration and degradation of pesticides and fertilizers in the environment, including hydrogeological factors.
- Training and/or experience with laws, codes and regulations pertaining to environmental protection, including investigation and remediation of environmental contamination.
- Experience with the common use practices for pesticide and fertilizer substances and/or other chemicals.
