This is a remote position that is flexible within countries where TNC has an established entity. This position is not eligible for relocation, visa or immigration assistance. This position will require significant travel to Gabon along with routinely working hours compatable with West Africa Time (WAT).

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Senior Project Specialist assists in the development and implementation of a key global strategy at TNC, Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) including Nature Bonds interactions and helps drive implementation of the overall business plan to achieve planned conservation outcomes envisioned by this strategy. The Senior Project Specialist supports global strategy leadership by primarily supporting the PFP in Gabon, as well as other geographies as needed, and serves as a technical resource for natural resource planning. The Strategy Lead serves as a key liaison and informational contact between the global strategy team and other TNC staff, as well as external actors, including government agencies, corporations, NGOs and other groups as applicable. The specialist tracks and/or assess corporate practices, governmental policies and decisions, or the practices or views of other stakeholders concerning the strategy or priority project and their potential impact on organizational conservation goals. They advises TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to the global strategy or priority project(s) and related issues and help ensure that TNC’s internal and external communications accurately reflect the strategy and conservation goals. May involve domestic and international travel.
The Senior Project Specialist provides expertise in applying sound planning principles, conservation science and policy support to enhance the capacity of local teams to achieve environmental outcomes. The position is principally dedicated to supporting the Gabon PFP inclusive Freshwater strategy and interacting with Nature Bonds serving a bridging role to assist TNC and the Government of Gabon (GoG) in coordinating common workstreams and applying science and technical knowledge to the implementation of biodiversity and environmental actions in the country. The position will provide critical support for the Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) and Blue Bonds (BB) projects in scientific and technical analysis and advice for achieving 30% protection of the country’s terrestrial, marine and freshwater resources, while building capacity of Gabon’s teams to achieve this goal. Other areas of work may include providing scientific advice to the government or towards environmental legislation, supporting implementation of the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), and assisting in technical coordination among TNC-Gabon’s various programs (terrestrial, freshwater, marine, forestry, sustainable finance) as it relates to the PFP and Nature Bonds work. The specialist may be work on and assist other PFP projects as assigned.
Some key Roles and responsibilities:
- Provides scientific and technical information, analysis, expertise and advice on achieving PFP/NB outcomes, particularly related to 30% protection of terrestrial, marine and freshwater resources.
- Plays a leading role in developing scientific and technical aspects of PFP Conservation Plans
- Contributes to scientific and technical capacity building of national teams for achieving PFP/NB outcomes, including mentoring, oversight, and quality control.
- Identifies needs for capacity building and facilitates coordination of support from TNC teams locally, regionally and globally to better support global conservation outcomes.
- Advises TNC and GoG teams on strategic issues related to biodiversity, land and marine use planning, protected areas and their governance, environmental legislation and management, climate change and other related topics.
- Supports the coordination, communication, and integration of technical aspects across TNC Gabon projects to better achieve TNC Gabon’s programmatic vision and results.
- Facilitates coordination and communication on technical and strategic aspects of work between TNC and GoG teams.
- Supports the identification of opportunities for meaningful collaborations for TNC, fostering positive and constructive relationships between TNC and other organizations or partners
- Domestic and international travel as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, international relations, international development, social science, natural science, ecology or related field and at least 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Significant experience in Gabon working with government and more specifically providing scientific technical assistance to governmental partners engaged in conservation.
- Experience in research, critical analysis, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports.
- Experience writing and editing promotional and informational material.
- Experience presenting to and/or communicating with government or legislative staff, community or business leaders, program leadership and/or similar audiences.
- Experience with time management.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization, including with senior management, and with Conservancy partners.
- Proven experience and understanding of international environmental conventions, such as the UNFCC and CDB.
- Proven communications skills preparing and presenting policy papers and strategies, developing written communications, and elaborating project proposals.
- Deep understanding of Gabon’s national priorities, policies, and institutional framework, particularly as they relate to biodiversity, climate change and conservation finance. Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree and 10 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Critical analytical thinking and excellent English and French writing skills are essential.
- Deep knowledge of, and fluency in, protected areas and management.
- Familiarity and knowledge related to business, governmental, and/or environmental policy and practices pertaining to the global strategy area of focus.
- Ability to sensitively advise other staff on how to effectively engage with internal and external parties.
- Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches.
- Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization. Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy. Must be a team player.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
- NGO and/or corporate relations experience a strong plus.

SALARY INFORMATION
This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $92,000 to $118,000 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
