Arizona State University: Office of the University Provost Tempe: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning

Description

The Water Equity Lab within the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP, https://sgsup.asu.edu/) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join a multidisciplinary team focused on how climate and governance shape access to adequate water and wastewater services. The project brings together expertise in economics, climate science, and engineering, through an interdisciplinary team from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Arizona State University.

The position focuses on community impacts of inadequate water and wastewater services. Household burdens of on-site wastewater failure will be examined through in-depth, qualitative interviews in the Black Belt region of Alabama. Inequities in the performance of drinking water systems will be analyzed across multiple states and consider disparities across incorporation status, income, and race.

The position will address governance drivers of on-site wastewater failure under current and future climate conditions. Little is known about the social dimensions of onsite infrastructure or how climate change will impact such systems. Regional modeling will examine the effectiveness of state, county, and local policies; findings can identify practices that enable the resilience of wastewater systems under more frequent and extreme precipitation events.

The position is benefits-eligible, full-time, for 12-months based at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.  The initial appointment will be for one year, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on funding availability and satisfactory performance. The successful candidates will be mentored by Dr. Maura Allaire and will work closely with NCAR collaborators. The anticipated start date is December 2024 (a later date is negotiable).
