The Senior Legal Advisor role is to develop and manage legal programmes supporting the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation for WaterLex.
The Senior Legal Advisor reports directly to the Director General and is responsible for the following:
30% – Programme Management of legal research and legal reform projects. The Senior Legal Advisor is in control of the budget and scope of the work, and is responsible for ensuring that resources are not over-committed.
20% – Management of the engagement of WaterLex in relation to the UN system, including international and regional human rights mechanisms, such as liaison with relevant stakeholders, providing advice and inputs to relevant papers, resolutions, organisation of events etc.
20% – Manage the parliamentarian programme at WaterLex, including liaison with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), conceptualizing and facilitating training workshops, developing resolutions and other relevant documents.
15% – Development of new projects in relation to the parliamentarian program as well as legal research and reform areas, building on existing work, and writing proposals with the support of the Development Director.
15% – Support to other programmes to give advice on legal and parliamentarian components.
University Law Degree, with a specialisation in environmental law and/or human rights law, plus additional qualifications in any of the following would be an advantage: international relations, water law, and environmental studies.
At least 7 years of experience in environmental law, preferably related to water governance, and/or human rights law
At least 5 years of programme management experience, including proposal development.
– A good understanding of international and regional human rights systems and its mechanisms and relevant international legal and political processes.
– Experience with international organisations and/or inter-governmental processes. Stakeholder engagement with Parliamentarians, governments, and other water governance actors.
Fluency in spoken and written English and French is a requirement. Knowledge of additional languages especially Spanish is considered an advantage.
This position is 100%, based in Geneva, and will require some international travel. Start date is 1st April 2017.
