Description

Civil Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate, Hydrology. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will report to the principal investigator and will work in collaboration with the research group UC-HAL. The position is comprised of technical, research, and project management functions related to practical research topics in integrated climate change impact assessment and hydrological uncertainty. The work will involve numerical modeling, coding, and application and testing of open-source analytical software for hydrological modelling and uncertainty analyses. General instructions will be provided, and the employee will need to work independently to make decisions about how the work will be completed within set and self-administered timelines.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Expectation to analyze and assess climate change impact data and integrate into hydrological models and modelling.
  • Adhere to standard FAIR Principle modelling guidelines, and relevant industry standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain technical codes and update team knowledge of industry codes and standards.
  • Maintain regular reporting protocols and record keeping.
  • Analyze and interpret model output to perform specialized statistical analyses and climate change impact assessments.
  • Work in an inter-disciplinary team, participate in coaching peers, and receiving guidance from multiple advisors.
  • Provide advice to supervisors on complex, project-based decisions and directions, actively participating in team brainstorming activities.
  • Work independently day-to-day, with guidance from supervisor(s) who identify major deliverables and directions.
  • Prepare and lead scientific articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Engage and communicate with industry partners and research collaborators.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years industry experience in environmental consulting, dealing with climate change and climate impact assessment applied to hydrological design in Canada.
  • Graduate level experience (MSc, MEng or equivalent) specializing in computational hydrology or water resources engineering or equivalent experience are required.
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of climate-hydrologic uncertainty modelling.
  • 4-6 years of experience with hydrological and/or climate modelling including climate (CMIP5 or 6), and hydrological (specifically Raven, HEC-HMS).
  • Knowledge of Canada’s hydrometric data network and meteorological data repositories and systems.
  • Basic scripting knowledge. (R, Matlab Python)
  • Knowledge of Canadian hydrology  and relevant industry standards, guidelines and practices.
  • Experience analyzing uncertainty in large scale hydrological systems impacted by climate and human regulation, and the interface between freshwater and marine systems.
  • Strong problem solving skills and  communication skills. (oral + written)
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by outreach activities. (related to water resources)
