Assistant Professor of Agricultural Engineering (Water Resources Management)

This is a 12-month tenure-track position with 50% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 50% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) responsibilities.  The incumbent will accrue tenure in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), University of Florida and will be located at the Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) in Homestead, FL.


The incumbent will be a member of an interdisciplinary faculty team working on a wide range of best management practices for fruit, vegetable, ornamental and landscape crops.  Research and Extension responsibilities will focus on water quality and quantity issues including water conservation, irrigation, best management practices (BMPs) and other topics considering urban and agricultural ecosystems. These faculty are located at TREC, ABE, and other IFAS Centers.


The incumbent will develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program with emphasis on: 1) hydrological processes over a range of spatial and temporal scales in urban and agricultural areas in south Florida; 2) applied  water quality and quantity research in agricultural and urban ecosystems of south Florida (including the impact of nutrient and other contaminants and interaction with pests and invasive species); and 3) development of environmentally sound and effective water management programs including irrigation technology for south Florida agricultural producers and urban dwellers.


The incumbent will also develop a scholarly extension program with measurable impacts on water conservation, irrigation, water quality, and related issues as they become relevant. Various educational methods will be used to deliver these programs to county agents, growers, consultants, and agribusiness personnel.  The incumbent will work with state and county faculty by providing information, educational materials, trainings and workshops to diverse stakeholders. 


The incumbent will serve on graduate committees, supervise graduate research, and publish research and extension results with students. The incumbent will actively seek contract and grant funding to support their program. Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas – Research, Teaching and Extension – regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.


The Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC; of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (, University of Florida ( is located in Homestead, Florida about 30 miles south of Miami. The Center was established in 1929 by an act of the state legislature in what is now Miami-Dade County. Research, teaching, and extension programs focus on tropical and temperate vegetable crops, tropical and subtropical fruit crops, and ornamental crops of southern Florida. The agricultural industry served by the center has an annual farm gate value of $834 million. Multiplier effects make agriculture’s impact on the local economy worth over $1 billion annually. Due to the region’s humid subtropical climate, TREC is the only state university research center in the continental United States focusing on a large number of tropical and subtropical crops. Also, the area’s oolitic limestone soil is unique to extreme southern Florida. In addition, the center addresses water and environmental issues that impact crop production over a shallow aquifer and in proximity to Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Marine Park, Florida Bay and major well fields which provide drinking water to the several million people in neighboring urban areas. The center’s 160 acres consist of offices, laboratories, greenhouses, vegetable fields, and fruit orchards. 


The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department ( at the University of Florida has diverse research, teaching, and extension programs located at the Gainesville campus and across the state at research and education centers. The Department’s mission is to develop professionals, create and disseminate knowledge, and promote the application of engineering, science and management principles to meet societal needs with respect to agricultural, biological and land and water resource systems.

Minimum Requirements:

This position requires a Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Agricultural, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Soil and Water Science, or a closely-related field. The candidate is expected to be well versed in the field of agricultural engineering, particularly as it relates to hydrology, irrigation/water management, instrumentation and data collection, and BMPs. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.  Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Additional expertise in hydrological modeling is desirable. Previous research and/or extension experience working collaboratively across disciplines is desirable.
