As a Wetland Specialist, you will lead efforts to conserve and integrate wetland ecosystems within the City of Calgary planning process, providing a high level of wetland expertise to the corporation. Primary duties include:
- Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of wetland and associated upland ecology, wetland modification, constructed wetland design, and wetland management in City planning, policy and infrastructure initiatives, development application reviews, and site inspections.
- Liaise with provincial wetland specialists and Water Act and Public Lands Act approval staff regarding specific planning items and overall city wetland conservation strategy.
- Prepare and approve regulatory documentation required by The City as part of submissions under the Water Act and associated Codes of Practice, including Wetland Assessment Impact forms and inquiries to the provincial Water Boundaries unit.
- Scope, review, and approve wetland inventories and impact assessments, wetland modification/construction plans and designs, and wetland management plans.
- Review wetland reporting submissions and, where required, serve as the authenticating professional.
- Develop and implement wetland conservation guidelines, including setbacks and permissible uses, wetland decision-making frameworks, and design guidelines for integrating, modifying, and constructing wetlands in Calgary, including stormwater wetlands and wetland monitoring standards.
- Support updates to the Calgary Wetland Conservation Plan.
Qualifications
- A degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field, and at least 5 years of experience in biophysical inventory, impact assessment, monitoring, restoration, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including at least 3 years of professional wetland experience.
- Designation as a Professional Biologist with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB) or Professional Agrologist with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
- Experience acquiring, reviewing, and analyzing wetland data, including the physical, chemical, and biological properties of wetland ecosystems, is essential.
- Working knowledge of legislation, regulations, guidelines, and tools relevant to the Alberta Wetland Policy is essential.
- Experience in municipal planning, policy development, regulatory review, wetland conservation, hydrology, and stormwater management/treatment are assets.
- The successful candidate will possess political and business acumen, along with excellent negotiation, collaboration, project management, and conflict resolution skills.
- You are a strong communicator with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
