By joining the Division of Water, Drinking Water Branch, Technical Assistance Section as an Environmental Scientist III in Hopkins or McCracken County, you will have the opportunity to provide assistance and technical oversight to state and federal agencies as well as Public Water Systems (PWS) in the interpretation and implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Provide Technical Assistance to achieve and maintain compliance for all PWS in Madisonville and Paducah Regions. Provide system evaluations, special studies, sampling, analysis & reports as needed for PWS to return & maintain compliance w/federal & state regulations. Provides guidance for chemical approvals and alternate staffing plans. Documents assistance provided & provides updates in the data base.
Holders of the Environmental Scientist III position will complete tasks such as:
- Provide Technical assistance to public water systems.
- Evaluate public water systems processes. Conduct special studies including various sampling techniques.
- Analyze and manipulate data and provide reports.
Holders of this job will learn the following skills: (optional)
- Water treatment optimization skills and how to conduct special studies.
- How to conduct Comprehensive Performance Evaluations, and Performance Based Training.
- How to interpret state and federal regulations and apply them.

Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. May also be standing,stooping,bending and lifting, and sitting at a desk, etc.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
