POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides leadership and direction to the natural resources and stewardship staff and to the Company’s engagement in environmental rulemaking, legislation, engagement and associated litigation on endangered species, wetlands, and NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) in support of the Operating Companies. In assessing policies, this position leads and engages Company employees across numerous functional areas, including system planning, permitting, transmission, research and technology development, commercial operations, and external affairs to facilitate broad collaboration to ensure maximum value for the customer. In addition, this position leads the company efforts on stewardship engagement through a strategic approach to help operating companies improve performance, optimize costs, innovate practices, enhance the environment, and improve long-term risk management. This position, in conjunction with the Washington DC office, helps advocate Southern Company positions before federal policy makers.

 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • A degree in an Ecological or Biological Discipline, Environmental Science or Policy, Engineering or an equivalent and related field is required; an advanced degree in one of these areas or a related field is highly preferred  
  • Knowledge of environmental regulatory and legislative development processes at the federal and state levels, specifically as it relates to endangered species, wetlands, and NEPA
  • Ability to develop and coordinate effective teams, interact with management, and work across functions throughout Southern Company
  • Sound decision making skills, critical and  strategic thinking, and ability to identify issues ahead of time to manage and communicate business threats and opportunities
  • Understanding of electric utility industry, energy generation, transmission & distribution, regulatory affairs is a plus
  • Ability to develop, build, and maintain strong internal and external relationships
  • Demonstrated performance and budget management skills/experience, holding others accountable for business results and motivating others to accomplish goals
  • Ability to cultivate and support a strong customer service, safety, and team focused culture
  • Utility operating company experience is a plus
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide guidance, leadership, and development of the natural resources and stewardship staff
  • Direct the Company’s engagement in endangered species, stewardship, wetlands and NEPA rulemaking, legislation, and associated policy and litigation.
  • Responsible for collaborating with all operating companies and leading all Company natural resource federal programs
  • Leading and ensuring adequate and appropriate customer communication across all levels of the Company
  • Managing the Company’s participation in industry / trade technical, legal, research, and policy advocacy associations

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • This position can require some travel – approximately 25% per year. 
  • This will include some overnight travel and will be primarily within the Southern Company retail footprint.
