Salary:  £60-70K per annum

Founded in 1929, the Freshwater Biological Association is dedicated to increasing the understanding and sustainable management of fresh waters. The charity is seeking an Executive Director to have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the charity’s staff, projects and programmes, estate and execution of its activities.

The charity has spent over 90 years working to protect our global freshwaters by facilitating innovative research and making information about these environments easily accessible, with an aim to halt and reverse the deterioration of freshwater ecosystems that are home to more than 40% of the world's fish species, as well as an array of invertebrates, birds, mammals and plants.

Reporting to the Chair of the Board, the Executive Director will be responsible for leading, coaching and developing the FBA’s senior management team, as well as ensuring ongoing operational excellence and quality across FBA’s finance and administration, fundraising, communications, governance and systems.

The role will also be responsible for refining the charity’s growth strategy, expanding revenue generation and fundraising activities, and developing new and strengthening existing relationships and partnerships. Additional responsibilities include deepening and refining all FBA’s communications, from web presence to external relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

The charity is seeking candidates with senior management experience in academia, industry or the third sector with a strong track record of effectively leading and / or scaling a performance and outcomes-based organisation and staff. You must be able to demonstrate evidence of having developed and delivered strategies that have taken organisations to the next stage of growth, as well as of excellence in organisational management and the development of high-performance teams.

Strong communication and influencing skills are a must, as well as the ability to cultivate strong relationships with a wide variety of people. Finally, you will have a passion for, and interest in, ecology and the mission and ethos of the FBA.
