Duke University’s Nicholas school of the Environment (nicholas.duke.edu) seeks applicants for a two-year visiting professor appointment in Energy and the Environment at a rank commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to our Masters in Environmental Management (MEM) Program by teaching courses and advising the Master’s Projects of our diverse group of professional students. Individual qualifications, academic excellence, collegiality, and demonstrated multicultural competence will be the most important criteria in the selection of a candidate.
Within the broad area of Energy and the Environment, there are two research areas of highest priority. The first is energy data analytics. For this area we are interested in applicants with experience storing, analyzing and visualizing large data sets related to energy generation or consumption. Applicants should be interested in teaching and advising projects related to time-series analysis, experimental design, computer visualization, and related techniques applied to energy-relevant data.
The second area of interest is in the assessment, design, and operation of renewable and emerging energy technologies. A candidate in this area would teach courses addressing science and engineering fundamentals, energy system integration, and practical considerations associated with project development, and place individual technologies in the broader economic, policy, and social context of their use. The successful candidate must be able to teach three to four courses in the existing Energy and Environment MEM core curriculum each academic year, advise at least three individual or group Master’s Projects, and excel at teaching and mentoring students from a range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds in a way that supports diversity and inclusion. Determination of the number of courses taught will depend on the candidate’s prior teaching experience and program needs.
