Role Description

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join the Cranfield Executive – the team that is shaping the future of Cranfield University. As a specialist postgraduate university, we focus our world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships to create, develop and sustain leaders in technology and management. Our work tackles global grand challenges and delivers worldwide impact across thematic areas as diverse as Aerospace, Defence and Security, Energy and Power, Environment and Agrifood, Management, Manufacturing, Transport Systems, and Water. Cranfield’s long standing and deep relationships with business and government power our research, which informs and shapes the innovation roadmaps of international industry, and influences government policy.

The incoming PVC for the School of Water, Energy and Environment (PVC SWEE) will lead the School’s growth in student numbers and the ongoing development of its research portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Executive and Vice-Chancellor, you will have University-wide responsibilities alongside executive responsibility for leading and managing the three themes: Water, Energy and Power, and Environment and Agrifood. As PVC SWEE, you will shape the School’s future trajectory and promote its highly interdisciplinary, industry engaged and impact-focused approach. You will be expected to build on an already-strong platform, positioning the School at the heart of public discourse on themes such as sustainability and climate change, and diversifying its portfolio of courses and research into new and profitable areas.

To be successful in this role, you will be an inclusive, developmental leader with the ability to articulate and deliver a compelling vision for the School’s future. You will have gained significant people leadership and financial management experience in a university or other research-focused organisation.

As well as the academic credibility to lead SWEE in maximising its REF submission, you will bring an absolute commitment to outstanding teaching and be able to demonstrate a successful track record of grant capture, innovation, and industry engagement. Most importantly, you will be attracted to and excited by Cranfield’s distinctive nature and mission. The knowledge and empathy to operate credibly, as well as the interpersonal and communication skills to engage with and influence a wide range of academic, government and industry partners, are essential.

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university. We therefore actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups, in addition to other underrepresented protected characteristic areas, such as disability and LGBTQ+.
