The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Convention on Biological Diversity, Science, Society and Sustainable Futures Division (SSSF). Under the general guidance of the Head of Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the Biodiversity Science, Policy and Governance Unit (BSPG), the incumbent will perform the following duties:
A. Provides scientific, technical, analytical and policy advice to the Parties of the Convention for Biological Diversity on issues related to the work of the Convention on (i) climate change and the linkages between climate change and biodiversity, (ii) nature-based solutions including to climate mitigation and adaption, and (iii) resilience and ecosystems-based disaster risk reduction. B. Monitors and analyzes the implementation of the Convention’s work on biodiversity and (i) climate change and the linkages between climate change and biodiversity, (ii) nature-based solutions to climate mitigation and adaption, and (iii) resilience and ecosystems-based disaster risk reduction at national and regional level and prepare relevant policy advice to Parties through the subsidiary bodies and COP. C. Acts as focal point and actively engages with international processes (e.g. COPs and subsidiary body meetings) under UNFCCC, IPCC, UNISDR and other UN related or non-UN processes relevant for climate and biodiversity, including nature-based solutions in order to highlight the contribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the work under the CBD, to climate change mitigation and adaptation, nature-based solutions and sustainable use, resilience and disaster risk reduction in the context of the sustainable development agenda, One Health approaches and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). D. Builds, cooperates and maintains partnerships with relevant organizations, institutions and stakeholders at national, regional and international levels, including scientific and academic, private sector, financial institutions, civil society and youth, and gender, inter alia, to help address the nexus biodiversity-climate-oceans-nature-health based solutions in a holistic and integrated manner. E. Liaises, cooperates and collaborates with the Secretariats of the UNFCCC, IPCC, UNISDR and other relevant international and regional organizations, stakeholders and institutions, in order to provide and facilitate capacity building to Parties to the Convention on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, address the impacts of climate change and disasters on biodiversity, and to implement ecosystem-based approaches and nature-based solutions to foster climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster risk reduction. F. Performs any other activities as may be assigned by the supervisors.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in areas related to biology, ecology, natural sciences, environmental policy, environmental management, environmental economics is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of environment, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable development, nature-based solutions or related areas is required.
At least 4 years of experience at international level is required.
Experience with the United Nations Organization, multilateral organizations, or working with Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable.
Demonstrated experience in linking biodiversity and ecosystem services to climate change mitigation, the sustainable development agenda and One Health approaches is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
NOTE: "fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
