A) About Organization
Water For People India initiated its operations in West Bengal in 1996 in Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts. Consistent with the global vision and mission, we exist to promote the development of highquality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments. Our organizational values are accountability, courage, empowerment, partnership, and transparency.
Water For People India programs have been implemented in 20 districts in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. In all, nearly 1.2 million people have been reached through community drinking water and sanitation, WASH in public institutions (i.e. schools) and market led approaches to sanitation. By 2023, Water For People India programs aim to directly benefit 2.7 million people. We aim to build capacities at the district level which will contribute to Water For People’s Everyone Forever approach, benefitting 14.8 million people. Water For People India implements programs directly and through locally registered non-government organizations.
B) The Context: Water For People India’s Sanitation work
Water For People’s progress in sanitation follows a cyclical process with emphasis on scale from the beginning:
Phase 1—Idea Testing: Providing support for promising technologies and business plans to grow. The key milestones are when the sanitation services and products meet the expectations of households and sanitation products and services are used regularly.
Phase 2—Viability/Market Testing: Supporting small-scale, controlled market implementation with aggregation of successes for sharing, volume, and momentum, especially in peri-urban areas with high population density. The key milestones are when businesses that provide desirable sanitation products and services are profitable and scalable.
Phase 3—Scale: Facilitating the policy environment, marketing, awareness, and financial services, leading ultimately to a marketplace that reaches even the poorest of the poor. The key milestone is achieving our Exit Checklist for sanitation in the Everyone Forever districts.
Demonstrating success at each of these phases is critical for us if we are to achieve scale with sanitation.
With the above foundation, Water For People India is keen to undertake a rapid exploratory study to understand the community latrine building approach for sustainability and scale in peri-urban Kolkata.
The study would result in idea testing of a Community latrine building core initiatives in peri-urban Kolkata.
