WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Conservation Scientist provides technical, scientific and writing support for conservation initiatives within the Michigan Sustainable Fisheries strategy. The Scientist coordinates field data design, collection and analysis.  They classify targets, assess data to prioritize areas for conservation, and develop and test conservation practices to advance the Sustainable Fisheries strategy under TNC’s 2030 goals.  They will conduct scientific surveys and research, records data, writes reports and develops proposals to administer and coordinate conservation programs with multiple state and federal agencies to promote sustainable fisheries practices in the Great Lakes. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. This position has a 1-year term limit, with the possibility of renewal.  Staffing needs for this position is part-time averaging 30-40 hours per operation period (bi-weekly) at the discretion of the supervisor. Operational periods are generally sporadic and clustered by opportune weather conditions, and no guarantee of a minimum number of opportunities is given or implied.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.                                
  • Experience conducting surveys, recording data and writing project reports or manuscripts.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data.
  • Experience with Great Lakes fisheries issues.
  • Experience working with fisheries agencies, particularly those in the Great Lakes region.
  • Experience developing and maintaining good working relationships with diverse partners, including state, Tribal and federal agencies.
  • Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts.
  • Experience developing or implementing applied science projects to inform conservation priorities or actions.
  • Must live in the northern Lower Peninsula area of Michigan.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.      
  • Ability to understand program budget development and monitoring.   
  • Ability to interpret guidelines and evaluate information and adapt accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of  $27.80 – $32.80 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
