DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Climate Monitoring and Policy Services Division, and the overall guidance of the Head of the Technical Coordination and GFCS Support (TCG) Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Support the preparation of WMO policy relevant climate science information and its incorporation in flagship climate policy products such as the global and regional state of climate reports;

(b) Assist in developing modern approaches for the visualization and communication of climate variability and climate change information, such as the State of the Climate reports;

(c) Work on developing tools and platforms for modern data collection and input from countries, regional and global data centers related to monitoring climate trends and extreme events and associated risks and impacts;

(d) Organize workshops to promote best practices in communicating climate change information at regional and national scales, in collaboration with the WMO Regional Offices and the relevant United Nations specialized agencies;

(e) Organize training events on the regional and national state of the climate reports, in collaboration with the WMO Education and Training Office (ETR), Regional Offices and Technical Commissions’ experts;

(f) Lead the improvement of communication on projects to enable their better understanding by Members, in collaboration with the Members Services Department, the Strategic Communication Office and other relevant internal and external entities;

(g) Lead the design and implementation of modern digital based information, such as online data collection tools, story maps, and dashboards for enhancing the impact of climate information and services at global, regional and national levels;

(h) Collaborate with WMO departments and offices, NMHSs, National Statistical Offices, partners and international organizations on data and synthesis related to weather and climate and their influence on SDGs;

(i) Support ongoing WMO efforts towards the youth on topics that covers WMO mandate in weather, water and climate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Master’s degree or equivalent in international development, environmental studies or a closely related field.

Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience climate change and related data analysis and communication.

Other requirements
Experience with the United Nations development and climate change frameworks would be an advantage.
Experience in organizing workshops, expert meetings and training events. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written).

Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)

Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.

SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 50377

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 40805 (in addition to the net base salary)
