BACKGROUND
IUCN’s (International Union for Conservation of Nature) mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. IUCN Maldives works to advance coral reef resilience, adaptation to climate change, and megafauna species protection in the Maldives.

The Conservation Science intern will be working closely with Social Science Officer and Citizen Science Officer at IUCN Maldives towards providing support to tasks within the project REGENRATE portfolio, specifically assisting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to extract and compile of information on Protected Areas from existing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), site assessment reports and local monitoring reports. Additionally, he/she will create profiles for existing Protected Areas based on the information collected.

JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a local search of young talent and only nationals or individuals holding the appropriate visa of the duty station (Maldives) are eligible to apply.

This internship aims to offer students undergoing graduate or post-graduate studies a meaningful work experience by supplementing their learning through a practical and on-the-job training approach. In doing so, the intern’s knowledge is supplemented through a practical learning experience while IUCN derives some level of advantage from the young professional’s services as well as the possibility of gaining new perspectives from the intern.

The learning opportunities and associated responsibilities of the intern will include:

• The interns will be assigned to technical officers and a short training on data extraction and compilation will be provided.

• Extract and collate data on existing Protected Areas published and unpublished reports including but not limited to gazette, technical papers, EIAs, site assessment reports, research papers and local monitoring reports.

• Using data collected, prepare profiles for existing Protected Areas and enter this information to the existing EPA database.

• Participate in meetings and contribute to team work and tasks within the project REGERERATE portfolio

GUIDANCE AND MENTORING:

• The candidate once selected, will be given an orientation of the Project REGENERATE portfolio specifically on Environmental Protection Agency, and whenever opportunity comes, on IUCN as an institution.
• Based on interest of the candidate, the candidate will also be mentored about higher education avenues abroad and/or carrier planning in Protected Areas Field.
 

REQUIREMENTS
 • Enrolled in an undergraduate university programme (e.g., Bachelors or its equivalent) and not have graduated from it; or

• Enrolled in a graduate university programme and not have graduated from it. The work experience that they seek to obtain should be in line with their studies or the requirements set by their academic institution;

• Ability to extract and collate data from varied sources (eg. gazette, technical papers, EIAs, site assessment reports, research papers and local monitoring reports);

• Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to undertake repetitive tasks accurately and consistently;

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Access and Excel);

• Ability to work independently and on multiple tasks simultaneously;

• Highly motivated to learn and develop new skills;

• Fluency in spoken and written English and Dhivehi.
