The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 160 academic, research and professional staff. In 2023, the school obtained $19M in research funding, produced over 700 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science.

The School hosts the Earth and Sustainability Science Research Centre, the Climate Change Research Centre, the Centre for Ecosystem Science, the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation, and the Evolution and Ecology Research Centre. The School is housed in new, state-of-art facilities on the University’s Kensington campus.

The School is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Level B academic) in the Environmental Earth Sciences. The purpose of this role is to conduct high quality research, teaching and research student supervision in the UNSW Earth Science and/or Physical Geography majors. The School is interested in an appointment within the broad fields of the Earth sciences but specific fields of expertise might include:

• Environmental Earth Sciences

• Earth Sciences for the energy transition and future economy

• Physical Geography

• Geochemistry and/or mineralogy

• Geodynamics and plate tectonics

• Regolith and mineral exploration

• Atmospheric composition, chemistry and processes

• Sedimentary systems

• Hydrology

• Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing (applied to the Earth Sciences)

• Soil Science (excluding strictly agricultural science)


About the role

  • Level B ($126k – $145k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Continuing
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the Head of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Conduct of high-quality research in the Earth Sciences, independently and as part of research teams.
  • Publication of scientific papers and reports in highly ranked journals and provision of reports to funding bodies.
  • To maintain and grow research through success in application for external research funds, including the national competitive grant schemes and/or contract research.
  • Supervision of research students enrolled in Honours, Masters and PhD degrees.
  • Teaching and coordination of units within undergraduate degree programs, including use of digital educational platforms.
  • Contribute to curriculum and course development in teaching programs in the Earth Science and/or Physical Geography majors.
  • Contribution to the objectives of relevant research centres and groups within the university, including the ESSRC.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., UNSW Centres, Commonwealth and State Governments, collaborating Universities, industry partners).
  • Participation in major conferences and/or workshops relevant to the disciplinary area.
  • Contribution to the administration and leadership roles appropriate to the level of appointment within the School as required.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Earth Science, Physical Geography or related sciences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research.
  • A strong track record of publications in top-tier journals and conference presentations (relative to opportunity).
  • Capacity to secure research funding from competitive grant schemes and other sources and/or obtain research contracts (relative to opportunity), including fellowships.
  • Capacity to work within, and commence building, a research team and attract higher degree research students
  • Capacity to deliver high quality and engaging teaching in undergraduate courses, at introductory and advanced levels, including digital delivery of course content.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and presentation skills.
  • A commitment to the collaborative and inclusive culture of the School.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
