Background – The developing regions of the world and IWMI are moving rapidly into a digital era in which the provision of inclusive and accessible information products is vital, from individual farmers to national, regional transboundary and international policies and investments. This opportunity will provide space for a researcher to expand IWMI’s existing portfolio of digitally based products and help meet growing needs in relation to water systems and the opportunities provided by new and emerging digital technologies and approaches. In a systems-based manner, the work will provide evidence and data that supports implementation of investment, help inform policy and strengthen capacity of people and organizations in developing regions that relate to water, agriculture and natural resource management.

This opportunity is for a researcher who:

  • will have one or two digital methodological skills (machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, virtual-augmented reality) that they have used and/or developed in an area related to water or natural resource management;
  • can develop their own projects as well as co-ordinate and lead a wider body of work relating to water management in the context of research for development;
  • has developed data and tools from an economic and/or social science focus that complements work underway in biophysical elements of water management. We envisage the type of product(s) to be developed as demand driven, co-designed to have a more inclusive approach, improve usability and uptake.
  • is a team player who challenges and develops new thinking, as well as integrate ideas and approaches from across the organization.
  • can communicate their ideas, products, analyses in a compelling way to a range of audiences such as funders, investors, policy advisors and other researchers.
  • Depending on qualifications and experience, the opportunity is offered at an international researcher or senior international researcher level.

The role: The successful candidate will develop their own research-for-development funded projects that center on demand-driven digital applications related to water management. The person will contribute to the emerging OneCGIAR initiative of System Transformation in a Digital Era that will provide information relating to one or more areas of water management with a specific focus on societal benefits in developing countries where land and water management are central issues relating to the global issue of sustainability.

The person will work with others to generate and implement a portfolio of research-for-development projects that integrates and builds across other digital innovation work within IWMI such as, water accounting, flood and drought risk warning and use of open data cube technologies. Work with other CGIAR centers and external organizations (e.g. private enterprise, universities, NGO’s or public sector).

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • 3-10 years relevant work experience for Researcher level; 10+ years relevant professional experience for Senior Researcher level.

  • Knowledge of big-data management and big-data platforms and their application related to water, agriculture, environment and decision-making, preferably in developing countries;
  • Background working with and analyzing large datasets and developing/using software to interpret them;
  • Track record of publications in international peer-reviewed scientific-literature;
  • Experience developing and implementing digital innovations (development of IT tools etc.);
  • Experience in water and/or natural resource management and issues set within a research environment;
  • Successful experience applying for and winning proposals and/or grants (for senior level appointment).

  • Experience living and working in countries with developing economies
  • Knowledge of the private sector and small and medium size enterprises (SME), start-up environment
  • Experience working with and building a team (essential for senior researcher post).

This is a globally recruited position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience, an attractive retirement plan, comprehensive international insurance coverage and a transportation allowance.
