Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Environmental Modelling

University of Reading

Reading, , GB

We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to join the Environmental Science Research Division and work on a 5-year BBSRC funded project to model the environmental impacts and benefits resulting from shifts in land management and land use due to proposed changes to the UK food system that benefit disadvantaged communities. The role provides an excellent opportunity for you to develop your own interests that align to the project.

You will work on an interdisciplinary project entitled ‘Co-production of healthy, sustainable food systems for disadvantaged communities’, funded by the ‘Transforming the UK food system for healthy people and a healthy environment’ programme. Your primary role will be to model the environmental impact of the current food system which supplies disadvantaged communities and then predict the impact of alternative food supply chains, developing methods to mitigate negative consequences.

The focus of your activities will be to develop GIS spatial models that simulate the impact of land use and land management changes on soil carbon storage, water quality and biodiversity. As such, you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Environmental Modelling or other relevant discipline
  • Strong quantitative skills and a working knowledge of a programming language (e.g. R or Python)
  • Experience modelling spatial data and using GIS to visualize model outputs
  • Excellent communication skills and the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment
