Under the direction of the Regulatory Affairs Officer, the incumbent monitors water resources within Mashantucket and be engaged in programs intended to mitigate water quality degradation and protect human health within all lands owned by the Tribal Nation. Monitoring includes evaluation of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of ponds, streams, wetlands, groundwater and discharges to and from storm-water and wastewater management systems. Activities may also include monitoring of potable water systems and other aesthetic and recreational water features. Programs include those generally applicable to water quality such as the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and other laws intended to protect natural waters/wetlands and human health. Roles can range from independent assessment, obligatory compliance or regulatory oversight. Compliance activities include active response to correct routine deficiencies. For example, repair of erosion and sedimentation control measures, response to minor spills and routine maintenance of spill prevention collection sumps. The incumbent is expected to be an active collaborative member of a diverse regulatory department staffed by environmental as well as other regulatory disciplines. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the enhancement of the department’s environmental protection programs and assist with initiatives to educate the community and enhance the sovereign rights of a Native American Tribal Nation. Valid Connecticut Driver’s License is required. Must provide a yearly DMV Certified Driving History. A Bachelor’s Degree in environmental, life, or earth science or an equivalent combination of education and experience, that includes direct work experience. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. Established ability to operate computers and different software packages for data collection and management. Experience with mapping software such as AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS is a plus. Experience in environmental testing methods for water quality, sampling equipment, and sensors. Working knowledge of methods, practices and equipment used in maintaining, repairing, testing and adjusting water quality instrumentation and appurtenances. Working knowledge of safety practices necessary for the work. Ability to obtain OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, and as part of a team, to complete projects on time without direct daily supervision. Effective written and oral communication skills.
