Job Overview

The Consultant will work with the project team to scope and develop content across OneWorld’s programmes of work. The consultant will primarily generate evidence-based content on a variety of projects, as well as reviewing and coordinating others’ inputs. They will also manage projects, conduct research, engage with stakeholders and assist in proposal (bid) development. 

Primary Responsibilities

The consultant will work with and within multi-disciplinary teams, and with researchers, project managers/ programmes, sub-consultants and project coordinators, junior technical assistants and interns.

The consultant will be required to:

  • Scope, co-ordinate, manage and execute projects
  • Undertake qualitative and quantitative research (including in-depth stakeholder engagement), analyse findings and provide policy recommendations
  • Provide policy and institutional analysis and review across a range of themes
  • Write, review and contribute to reports through the project cycle, including collation and integration of all work from various contributors
  • Interface with and manage contributions from sub-consultants working on the project
  • Undertake Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) activities per project
  • Regularly facilitate or co-facilitate project workshops
  • Map and analyse stakeholders, and lead/manage stakeholder engagement and participatory analysis processes
  • Contribute to OneWorld’s business development processes including client and partner relationships, proposal development and project finance/budget planning
  • Present at meetings, conferences, and publish research outputs

Requirements

An excellent communicator with the following minimum qualifications and skills set requirements apply:

  • A Masters qualification in Climate Resilience/Development Studies/Economic Development, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or a related discipline
  • At least 4 years work experience, 2 of these (minimum) as part of a consultancy (or consultancies), engaged in climate resilience and sustainable development
  • Proven track record in sustainability AND in some of the following areas: climate resilience, climate/sustainable finance, the Just Transition,  nature-based solutions, water resource security and management, institutional development, and policy and governance
  • Proven experience in working with diverse stakeholders in a range of contexts, across Africa or globally
  • Proven experience in delivery of projects
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills with ability to relay technical concepts and research in an easily understandable and relevant manner

Key behavioural requirements include:

The candidate should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, as well as proven interpersonal/relationship building skills. The candidate should be a team player with ability to manage and work with complex, multi-disciplinary teams. The candidate should also be well organised with the ability to effectively plan and prioritise tasks to achieve tight project deadlines. Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to work under pressure are critical for this role.

Location: This position is office based in Cape Town.

Remuneration: Remuneration will be market-based and calculated on a cost-to-company basis.
