Job description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
You’ll play an important role in understanding the presence and impacts of chemicals in the estuarine and coastal environment. This is an exciting opportunity to influence the future chemical evidence requirements and ensure a ‘source to sea’ chemicals strategy that drives environmental decisions in English saline waters.
Working within the estuarine and coastal team, but with strong links to the wider chemical teams in the Environment Agency, we are looking for a technical specialist with strong data skills to interrogate data sources and analyse chemical evidence to support decision making and policy development. Our objective is to ensure that we have an effective chemical monitoring programme in English estuarine and coastal waters, which links the evidence from inland surface waters with the wider marine environment. Analysis of this wide range of information will ensure that we develop effective future regulatory decisions for emerging challenges around chemicals in our nearshore waters.
Depending on your estuarine and coastal technical expertise, you’ll also support other priority work areas such as habitat restoration, blue carbon, marine policy and regulation. You will also help us identify and procure the information and evidence we need to support ours and others’ environmental decision making.
You will need to effectively collaborate with your team, and other parts of the Environment Agency, such as our freshwater systems leads and operational teams. Also, with our external partners including Defra and other government bodies, industry sectors, and academia.

The team

You’ll join our Estuaries and Coasts Team in our Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate. We provide leadership on the protection and sustainable restoration of our estuaries and coasts, which includes shaping catchment to coast management, marine licensing, and coastal habitat restoration.
In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.

Experience/skills required

Essential:
– Proven track record of assessing marine environmental data.
– Strong data skills and be capable of understanding complex information and using it to solve problems.
– Experience of using Excel and R, as well as mapping ability.
– Being comfortable interrogating large datasets from a range of sources; combining a pragmatic approach, adjusting where necessary and with attention to detail.
– Excellent communication skills and be able to discuss evidence with clarity and conviction with a range of partners.

Desirable:
– Knowledge around chemicals in the water environment, particularly in saline waters.
– Project support experience.
– Knowledge of chemical monitoring, and regulations applied to the water environment.
– Knowledge of our role and that of other delivery partners around chemicals.Contact and additional information
