The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) is a community-based agency that works in partnership with watershed municipalities to protect the natural environment. CLOCA provides environmental services within the Region of Durham, from the Oak Ridges Moraine to Lake Ontario – from Ajax/Pickering in the west to Clarington in the east. CLOCA encompasses a 627 sq. km mix of rural and rapidly growing urban landscapes.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is seeking an Ontario Job Creation Partnership (OJCP) eligible individual for the position of Sustainable Neighbourhoods Water Resource Technician. This position is responsible for providing support for gathering, compiling and analysis of water resource data to provide baseline and performance monitoring in support of corporate programs that target watershed management objectives for water quality and quantity. The range of data considered includes groundwater, surface water, geomorphology, meteorology, water quality, stream habitat including benthic and fish community sampling.

Responsibilities:

1. Inputs and modifies databases for spatial and non-spatial data, as well as aids in any necessary maintenance to applicable databases.

2. Enters necessary data into databases including, but not limited to the application of coordinate geometry and keyboard entry of tabular data.

3. Generates Metadata and documentation of project analysis, results and methods.

4. Assists with the preparation of presentation material for reports, workshops and open houses.

5. Maintains up to date knowledge of trends within the water resource management industry.

6. Uses creativity and concentration and reasoning to prepare content, manage data, organize work, and identify new program and service activities.

7. Uses sight to proofread, draft documents, read and enter data, design computer products like mapping, hearing to listen to users’ questions, and touch to operate computer equipment.

8. Sits at a desk in order to perform the duties of the job.

SKILLS

9. Completed post-secondary education in water resource management or related discipline such as environmental sciences/studies, engineering, geography, computer science with an emphasis on water resource management.

10. Knowledge of engineering support software including advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis and data visualization.

11. Able to comprehend documentation that is technical and scientific in nature.

12. Applicants have a working knowledge of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and ESRI software. Knowledge of specialized software applications, tools and other technologies including ArcWATER Resource, ArcPro (Spatial Analysis, 3D Analyst), MS Access, MS Office would be considered an asset.

25. Comfortable with field work, i.e. inclement weather, working in and around water, bugs, climbing ladders, lifting, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position generally works 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend and evening work and is exposed to hazards within Health and Safety Regulations such as working in the field and dealing with the general public.

Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with CLOCA’s Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition

Ontario Job Creation Partnership Eligibility

The Ontario Job Creation Partnership (OJCP) provides work experience to eligible unemployed job seeders through projects that benefit the community or local economy. At the end of their participation, participants in the program will have recent work experience and additional skills to add to their resumes, increasing their chances of successfully finding long-term employment. While project s funded under the program provide community benefit, the primary focus must be on the individuals work experience.

To be eligible for OJCP, individuals must:

· be a resident of Ontario, and

· complete a readiness assessment by an OJCP Employment Service Provider, and

· meet the EI Act’s definition of an “insured participant”

· be unemployed. (Individuals are considered unemployed if they: are working less than an average of 20 hours per week, and are actively seeking full-time employment.)

· Individuals affected by long-term unemployment or in long-term receipt of social assistance may be especially suited for projects under OJCP.
