We are seeking a coordinator to oversee research and stewardship mission areas of the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park (ORWRP) at The Ohio State University. This urban wetland facility is located on the OSU campus and managed primarily by the School of Environment and Natural Resources, for which it plays a role in all three mission areas of research, education, and outreach. In coming years, the ORWRP will be the site of increased long-term environmental monitoring, habitat restoration, and public education programming, while continuing to be a “living classroom” for SENR and other OSU students. Thus, we are seeking a motivated, experienced individual to participate in the development and lead the day-to-day research and stewardship activities at this unique environmental resource. The coordinator will work at the direction of the ORWRP Leadership Committee and be directly supervised by the Chair of that entity.
Position Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Takes central role for enacting Research and Stewardship goals of ORWRP Strategic Plan and Management Plan (in development), under the supervision of the ORWRP Chair.
- Primary point of contact for research functions.
- In collaboration with ORWRP Chair, takes primary role in the establishment and design on long-term environmental monitoring protocols at ORWRP within the goals of the Management Plan.
- Provides day-to-day on the ground maintenance and management of aquatic and terrestrial habitats at the ORWRP.
- Responds to unforeseen/problematic issues that arise at the facility (e.g. engaging with public on unauthorized activities, in conjunction with OSU PD when necessary; power outages; equipment failure).
- Oversees the collection, management, and analysis of long-term environmental data.
- Supervises research and site management volunteers and student employees.
- Provides coordination with ORWRP Facilities Manager (shared 50% with Waterman Farm) to manage onsite infrastructure, and provide logistical support to student and faculty research projects.
- Serves as building manager for the Heffner Research and Education Building (i.e. primary contact for OSU PD, FOD, and Landscape Services).
- Prepares quarterly and annual progress reports to the Wetlands Leadership Committee.
- Collaborates with the ORWRP Chair and other faculty on pursuing project funding for Research and Outreach.
- Manages teaching and research labs, including being primary contact for EHS.
- Maintains research equipment and supplies.
- Manages Lenel account for building access in coordination with SENR Instructional Aid at ORWRP.
- Participates in outreach and fundraising events.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or equivalent combination of education/experience and minimum of 2 years’ experience in Natural Resources, Biological Sciences, Ecology, or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental research and monitoring in either terrestrial or freshwater aquatic systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of habitat management, invasive species control, and ecological restoration.
- Practical experience using relevant tools and equipment associated with habitat management (e.g. chainsaw, herbicide applicators, etc.).
- Applied experience collecting and managing natural resource monitoring data, in either aquatic or terrestrial contexts.
- Experience writing technical reports in the Natural Sciences.
- Supervisory experience in the Natural Resources or related fields.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
Minimum Desired Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Natural Resources, Biological Sciences, Ecology, or related field.
- Record of peer-reviewed publication in Natural Sciences or related fields.
- Experience delivering presentations to a professional audience.
- Knowledge and experience in managing freshwater wetlands.
