Groundwater Technologist – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a full-time limited term Groundwater Technologist, Geoscience, to join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch for the launch of a multi-year project evaluating groundwater resources in Southern Alberta. In the role of the Groundwater Technologist, you will develop a database of groundwater information pertaining to Alberta’s shallow and deep groundwater resources and compile, review, quality control, analyze, and manage available groundwater data in collaboration with the project team. As the successful candidate, you will also manage new data from water sampling programs and coordinate with laboratories for water sample analyses. Additionally, you will be involved in and supporting public dissemination of digital groundwater information by analyzing, tabulating, and generating statistical, graphical, and spatial representations of the compiled groundwater data. As the Groundwater Technologist leading the development of the groundwater database, you will be contributing to groundwater resource quantification and characterization that advances the understanding of water resources in Southern Alberta.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Accessing, assessing and compiling groundwater data (e.g. hydraulic head measurements, water quality analyses, pumping test analyses) and associated information (e.g. well details, location identifiers, qualitative descriptions) from a variety of formats (PDF, Access, SQL, Microsoft Excel) into a common database.
- Identifying linkages, using common identifiers, between groundwater data, point location records (e.g. borehole/corehole and well records), and hydro stratigraphic units.
- Performing quality control and evaluation of groundwater sample analysis records.
- Preparing statistical summaries, data distributions and comparative plots, and maps of groundwater data.
- Interacting with other geoscience professionals on data analysis and interpretation tasks.
- Preparing data, analysis, and interpretive results for public dissemination.
- Potential opportunity to support geological and hydrogeological fieldwork consisting of outcrop/section/landscape observations, water sampling, and geophysical surveys.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Technical diploma in geoscience, environmental, or hydrological technology, or a related discipline (e.g., B.Sc. in geology, Earth Science, or engineering).
- 3 to 5 years of related experience, and an understanding of groundwater principles.
- Familiarity with groundwater quality and quantity parameters, geologic terms, and statistical data analysis methods.
- Experience in groundwater data quality assurance and control procedures, and environmental laboratory sample submission and tracking is preferred.
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro and groundwater database and environmental data management systems and processes are considered assets.
- Collaborative approach to trouble-shooting, problem solving, research, and the ability to focus on repetitive tasks with attention to detail.
- Process improvement mindset and an interest in implementing technology to improve workflow.
