The Australian Water Partnership (AWP) is seeking an experienced and qualified professional to fill the role of AWP Pacific Coordinator based in the Pacific region. The position will remain open until filled.

About us

eWater (ewater.org.au) is a not-for-profit company owned by Australia’s State, Territory and Federal governments, promoting ecologically and economically sustainable water management. Since 2015, the AWP division of eWater (www.waterpartnership.org.au) has been working with developing countries in the Indo-Pacific region to support the sustainable management of water resources, and actively supporting the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals.

AWP is based in Canberra, Australia, but operates across the Indo-Pacific region under a service agreement with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The overall investment of $30M runs until late 2026 and will work in three regions – Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific. AWP offers a responsive and flexible mechanism to respond to water-related priorities of governments and partners across the Pacific.

Over five years AWP is expected to have supported the region through the following end of program objectives:

  • Partner countries are implementing co created policies, practices, and tools for climate resilient water resource management; and
  • Partner countries have improved capacity and strengthened partnerships for climate resilient water resource management

About the role

The AWP Pacific Coordinator will support AWP in the implementation of allocated DFAT funds under the Agreement and provide AWP with a physical presence in the Pacific subregion, in proximity to DFAT Posts, Pacific governments, regional organisations, and stakeholders.

The position will preferably be based in the Pacific, ideally in Fiji, Samoa, the Solomon Islands or Vanuatu. Other locations within the Pacific region will also be considered.

Duties include:

  • supporting engagement with Pacific governments and regional organisations, stakeholders and international partners;
  • supporting the identification and development of new activities (including drafting and/or contributing to concept notes and Terms of Reference) in consultation with the AWP Canberra team, DFAT, and Pacific partner organisations;
  • facilitating or providing technical expertise to support the development and implementation of activities;
  • representing AWP at events, workshops, and field visits, and facilitating meetings and events as required;
  • supporting the implementation of AWP frameworks and strategies, including AWP’s Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion policy, performance systems, risk management, communications and knowledge management; and
  • supporting AWP strategic visioning
  • supporting AWP business development
  • supporting AWP reporting

The AWP Pacific Coordinator will be contracted by AWP on a part-time basis (three days a week or equivalent up to a maximum of 140 days per annum) until 21 January 2025 with an option to extend, and reports to the AWP Program Lead. Day-to-day, the AWP Pacific Coordinator will work closely with the AWP Program team including the Strategy and Operations Lead, Technical Lead, Program Manager, Program Officers, and the broader AWP team.

Selection Criteria

EOIs will be assessed against the following selection criteria:

Essential criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent in water resources and/or international development or similar relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in program or project coordination, preferably in international contexts.
  • The ability to effectively and rapidly manage multiple and often competing priorities and challenges as they arise, often under tight timeframes.
  • Strong collaboration and high-level stakeholder management skills across the water sector, government, tertiary institutions, non-profit organisations, and industry.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and work autonomously, as well as be a strong team player.
  • Outstanding communications and networking skills, and ability to engage with people at all levels and across cultures.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and undertake domestic and international travel as required, with ability to travel regularly across the Pacific subregion.
  • As eWater cannot sponsor visas, preference is given to applicants that are resident in or have the right to work in a Pacific country.

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of program performance, monitoring and evaluation frameworks and principles.
  • Understanding of Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion principles and commitment to their application in international development.
  • Knowledge and experience in the Pacific subregion, and preferably management of water resources in the region.
  • Broad understanding of Australian water expertise.
  • Previous experience with Australian aid program initiatives.

Special requirements

  • The appointed person must comply with DFAT requirements and policies, including (but not limited to) child protection and fraud prevention.
