Position: Watershed Steward
Status: Full-time (up to 40 hours), temp, seasonal, non-exempt
Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is seeking to hire several Watershed Stewards for summer 2021. Stewards serve on the frontlines in the effort to prevent the transport of aquatic invasive species. The position is an opportunity to gain experience in the environmental field while protecting natural resources. This position is the foundation of the AWI’s flagship Stewardship Program and is critical to the success of AWI’s mission.
Job Description: Watershed Stewards report to the Regional Supervisor they are assigned to and will be trained to interact with the boating public, record and electronically enter waterbody-user information on mobile tablets, and familiarize the public with aquatic invasive species information. Stewards will also be trained to conduct watercraft inspections, identify aquatic invasive species, and inform the public about ways in which they can help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Hours and Pay: Stewards will work 8-10 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week, from May 24th through September 6th. Weekend & holiday work is required. Part-time work may be available through October 11th, contingent on funding availability. Stewards are paid an hourly rate starting at $13.50 per hour, with a max rate of $14.50 depending on years of service. Staff will be required to attend a multi-day, paid training the week of May 24th. It will be determined later if this training will be on the Paul Smiths Campus, virtual, or a combination and for everyone’s safety is subject to change at any time.
Job Locations: Stewards will be assigned to work a small number of boat launches as close to their place of residency as possible. Stewards will work at various public boat launches in Northern NY & Adirondack region. Duties & Responsibilities:
- Greet and interact with the public at boat launches, provide program’s educational message
- Perform watercraft inspections and hand removal of transported vegetation at boat launches in accordance with AWI’s program protocol
- Identify aquatic invasive species and determine if a watercraft meets the New York State regulatory standard for being “clean, drained and dry” and when/if a watercraft should be recommended for a boat decontamination
- Collect and record electronic data using tablet computers provided by AWI
- Adherence to College policy regarding safety and health practices concerning COVID-19 prevention will be required.
- All education and experience levels will be considered; applicants with degrees or coursework in natural resources, environmental studies, environmental science, recreation, wildlife, or related fields are preferred
- Capable of working independently
- Familiarity with watercraft and with aquatic invasive species is highly desirable but not required
- High level of motivation and enthusiasm, willing to initiate interaction with the public
- Strong communication skills, with prior experience working with a diverse public preferred
- Prior experience using a tablet computer or the ability to learn how to use a tablet computer for data entry purposes
- Ability to work in inclement weather
- Ability to spend extended amount of time on your feet, bending, and crouching to reach under vessels
- Applicants must have use of a personal vehicle for transportation and shelter at work locations
- Ability to work all weekends & holidays (required)
