Job Description

Job Announcement: Engineer I, II, or III
Utah faces numerous water challenges, and the Division of Water Resources’ Water Optimization Section seeks an engineer to help address these issues through collaboration and innovation. This role involves engagement in interstate water quality issues and coordination with various agencies and other states. Additionally, the Division supports the state-sponsored Agricultural Water Optimization Program. The position will provide technical and engineering expertise for these and future projects aimed at optimizing water use. The job is based in Salt Lake City, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Travel is required.

Salary Range:

  • Engineer I or II: $28.49 – $44.86 hourly, depending on experience.
  • Engineer III: $36.55 – $47.92 hourly, depending on experience.

Principal Duties:

  • Coordinate with staff, external agencies, and other states on water optimization projects and programs.
  • Provide technical expertise on water-related issues, including modeling, consumptive use calculations, and water quality.
  • Evaluate reports and studies and offer constructive feedback.
  • Research and integrate scientific and engineering knowledge into practical applications.
  • Attend relevant program meetings, including some out-of-state travel.
  • Collect and analyze data to support water optimization efforts.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Holds a Professional Engineer License (Engineer III) or has passed the FE or received a waiver from DOPL (Engineer I and II).
  • Has a working knowledge of Utah’s major river systems and their interstate connections.
  • Experienced in hydrologic modeling using current software and understanding consumptive use.
  • Possesses strong communication skills and is comfortable speaking in various group settings.
  • Experienced in working with agricultural efficiency projects.
