The University of the Western Cape’s Faculty of Natural Sciences offers education and research in a wide range of scientific disciplines. As one of the recognised leaders in Natural Sciences in South Africa and on the African continent, the Faculty, with a strong focus on both undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching, has, in the past decade, witnessed an unprecedented investment in science infrastructure with commensurate growth in undergraduate and postgraduate numbers and research productivity.

The Faculty’s Department of Earth Sciences hosts the Environmental and Water Science (EWS) and Applied Geology (APG) programmes, and occupies state-of-the-art facilities in both of the new Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences buildings. The campus of the University of the Western Cape is located in the vicinity of Cape Town International Airport.

This position offers an opportunity for a highly motivated, dynamic individual who has the potential to emerge as one of the future leaders in combining Resource Geology with the advances in Digital Earth Sciences in Southern Africa. Applications are invited from candidates with research and teaching experience in these fields. Candidates will have demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality courses at introductory and advanced levels in Resource Geology that integrate GIS and other relevant developments in Digital Earth Sciences. The Department of Earth Sciences operates the only non-commercial Highly Immersive Visualisation Environment (HIVE) on the African Continent, and the incumbent is expected to drive the integration of this facility into the research and teaching programmes of the Department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Resource Geology/GIS/Digital Earth Sciences as well as introductory courses in geology as required;
  • Planning and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate field work and administration of modules;
  • Develop and lead an internationally competitive, externally funded research program;
  • Supervising research projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Publishing research results in international journals relevant to the broader research field;
  • Service delivery at departmental level commensurate with experience.
Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements for appointment at Senior Lecturer level:

  • PhD relevant to Resource Geology/GIS/Digital Earth Sciences;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resource geology, GIS, and other relevant digital techniques;
  • Proven record of teaching in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Demonstrated experience of successful postgraduate research supervision.
  • Proven record of securing research funding from external sources.
  • A track record of publications in international peer-reviewed accredited journals in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development would be an advantage;
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.

Minimum Requirements for appointment at Lecturer level:

  • MSc relevant, or related to Resource Geology/GIS/Digital Earth Sciences;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resource geology and GIS;
  • Proven record of teaching in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment would be a strong recommendation;
  • A record of active research and research dissemination, e.g., by publications in national and /or international peer-reviewed accredited journals;
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.

Recommendations:

  • Experience in integration of HIVE techniques in Earth Sciences;
  • Experience in modern concepts in Digital Earth Sciences;
  • Experience in management of geoscientific lab environments.
  • Potential research collaborations with the current Earth Sciences staff members in areas of structural geology, geochemistry, geochronology and petroleum geology;
  • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development.
