Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The ECU Water Resources Center is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University and includes affiliated faculty and students from departments across the campus. The Center undertakes a diverse range of research and community engagement activities to support research and develop equitable partnership opportunities with the community, which are supported by over $14M in external grants. This position will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, students, staff, and community partners to develop and coordinate these activities. |
Job Duties | The ECU Water Resources Center, Department of Geological Sciences, and Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment seek a Research Assistant Professor for a one-year fixed-term temporary appointment beginning in August 2024 to support student-based community science and engagement activities. This faculty member will work with multiple project teams sponsored by the National Science Foundation, including the Water Corps, CoPE and LITGEO programs, as well as contribute to the integration of community science and environmental justice into the curriculum of education programs in both Departments. This faculty member will be expected to support the development, implementation, and assessment of these programs through research activities that broaden the participation of all people, including students and community members, in the field of Earth science. This faculty member will determine and apply best practices for developing community science programs and supervise community science research activities, including the direct mentorship of teams of undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students. Research activities may span the areas of geoscience education, community science, and their disciplinary area of expertise related to Earth Science. Additional specific duties will include community engagement, community outreach, educational program development, event coordination, and research tasks contributing toward scholarly productivity and peer-review publications related to community-based participatory science. This faculty member will work alongside a team of postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and students located at ECU, North Carolina Central University, and the University of Puerto Rico Arecibo. The person in this position will be expected to collaborate extensively with these team members both within and across institutions, including participating in community science Summits held in North Carolina and Puerto Rico. |
Minimum Education/Experience | PhD in Geoscience, Geology, Geoscience Education, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Education, or a closely related field. |
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation | None |
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education | Experience with community outreach, community-based geoscience research, community engagement, geoscience education, environmental geoscience, water quality, water, soil, and water contamination and other society relevant Geoscience areas. Experience with educational program development and/or assessment. Proficiency in Spanish will be beneficial. |
