Observed and future evolution of the different types of droughts in the Mediterranean region via EURAXESS

Recent observations and model projections show that the Mediterranean region is at risk of increasing droughts, because of ongoing climate change, societal vulnerability and large areas affected by water scarcity. Droughts can be characterized with low precipitation (meteorological droughts), reduced humidity in the soil (agricultural droughts), lack of water in streams, lakes and reservoirs (hydrological droughts). These different types of droughts have different times scales, depend on different factors and have different impacts on societal sectors and ecosystems. The research aim to analyses the interrelated time evolution of different types of droughts in the Mediterranean region with a focus on North Africa and other areas at risk. The research will be based on the analysis of unused data from North Africa and the use of climate and hydrological budget models
