Sustainable Development Officer

This position is located in the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP), in the UN Secretariat. The Sustainable Development Officer reports to the Executive Director of UNOP.
The focus of this job is to provide guidance and support to the Secretary-General's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocates with the overall objective to ensure efficient and impactful work of the group as a key asset to drive the Decade of Action.
Within delegated authority, the Sustainable Development Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
•Develops sustainable development databases and qualitative information required for recurrent or ad-hoc assignments.
•Drafts inputs for papers and analytical studies on sustainable development issues.
•Formulates, identifies and analyses project proposals on sustainable development issues.
•Attends international, regional, and national meetings for consultations with colleagues in other institutions and external partners dealing with sustainable development issues.
•Assists in the organization and servicing of group meetings, seminars, etc. on sustainable development issues.
•Prepares speeches and other content for presentations by senior staff and high-level advocates on sustainable development issues.
•Prepares inputs and content to be delivered at High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and other intergovernmental bodies, inter-agency or expert groups on issues relating to sustainable development.
•Follows intergovernmental meetings, current events, public opinion and press, prepares summary reports, advises on appropriate actions/responses and provides substantive support, as needed.
•Participates in missions on sustainable development issues, usually as a member of a team.
•Organizes training seminars/workshops addressing sustainable development issues.
•Performs other duties as required, including administrative tasks.
•Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities both internally and externally.
•Professionalism: Ability to apply sustainable development theories, concepts and approaches. Ability to conduct independent research and analysis on sustainable development topics, determine suitability, validity and accuracy of data provided by different sources. Shows skill in developing sources for data collection. •Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in sustainable development, economics, international relations or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, policy-oriented work in a broad range of sustainable development issues is required.
Experience with managing high-profile SDG advocacy initiative(s), including designing and executing communications strategy, negotiating legal framework, overseeing the budgetary related tasks and donor reporting is desirable.
Experience in drafting reports and briefing materials regarding the SDG advocacy for the UN Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General and other senior UN officials is desirable.
Experience with organizing high-level expert missions related to SDG advocacy is desirable.
Experience with SDG advocacy and outreach initiatives including the UN leadership and high-level external partners is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
• This position is open for recruitment for an initial period of three months through 31 March 2021 and may be subject to extension.
• If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
