We work in a national team, in the Environment and Business directorate, helping to plan and to implement plans for the Water Industry related to protecting and improving environmental water quality. The water industry is due to invest through the 2024 Price Review to improve the environment. Our team is integral in helping to achieve these investment levels. Planning for the next price review and River Basin Management Plan starts imminently and we need you.
The role is extremely varied and requires a range of transferable skills. We work closely with teams focusing on price review, River Basin Management Plans and Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans. You will be given opportunities to work with a range of other teams and your skills will help to embed our work within theirs. The ideal candidate is highly motivated and collaborates effectively in a team atmosphere. Our small team has developed relationships with internal and external customers. You will be sensitive to the needs of customers whilst working within the bounds of legislation and guidance.
This is an exciting time to join the team to help steer the work that the water companies do.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
The team

We’re part of the Environment and Business Directorate which supports the Environment Agency by using evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and help delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources. We steer the direction, set the priorities, and shape our organisation’s approach to future water industry environmental water quality actions.
Experience/skills required
We are looking for a talented and dynamic team member to contribute to our work. You will be highly motivated and able to work independently.
You’ll have:
- A degree in an environmental discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills –able to identify your audience, know their needs, and use an effective and engaging style of communication both written and oral.
- Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and encourage others to consider diversity issues at work.
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvements and efficiencies, develop new approaches/processes and embed them successfully.
- Numerical confidence.
- Knowledge of how to develop new workstreams and land them within the wider business.
- An understanding of water quality issues and policies.
- Ability to respond to tight deadlines, prioritise, work quickly and accurately to ensure actions are completed.
