Description of the thesis topic

The proposed PhD concerns the intensification of the hydrological cycle in West Africa, with a particular focus on flood evolution and the driving factors. While studies have been carried out on certain basins in West Africa, a regional-scale analysis has yet to be produced. This is now possible thanks to a new database available for the region. An in-depth quantitative analysis of the mechanisms at play in this evolution has so far only been carried out to a limited extent, notably for reasons linked to the difficulty of carrying out attribution studies in hydrology. Modeling these extremes in such a way as to separate the external forcings from the internal feedbacks influencing system dynamics remains an arduous task – yet it is the only one that can establish the link between cause and effect. To this end, a conceptual modeling framework will be set up to test and possibly invalidate certain hypotheses concerning the hydro-climatic mechanisms at play in the evolution of floods in the region.

Work Context

The Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement (IGE) is a public research laboratory under the auspices of CNRS, INRAe, IRD, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and Grenoble-INP, working on climate change and the anthropization of our planet in the polar, mountain and intertropical regions, which are particularly sensitive and have major societal implications. The IGE is one of the main laboratories of the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG), an INSU federative structure.
