Essential Functions

1. Under direction supervision of the Centralized Design Unit Supervisor, performs routine environmental engineer work on abandoned mined land properties:

  • Travels to mine sites to investigates site conditions to determine safety and environmental hazards.
  • Collects soil, water, and groundwater samples, to identify contamination and/or geological laboratory analysis.
  • Documents and reports site conditions.

2. Assists the Supervisor with reclamation designs for restoration of land and water resources:

  • Assists with calculations to abate hazards using Computer Aided Draft/Design. (CAD) software; engineering design software.
  • Performs basic engineering calculations such as earthwork, cost estimates for reclamation.

3. Assist in the inspection of awarded construction contracts for abandoned mine reclamation projects.

  • Monitors projects to ensure construction is completed in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Composes construction inspection reports and documentation.
  • Assists surveying line for grade checks and quantity calculations.

4. Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonable within the scope of the above mentioned duties.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.
2. Requires no previous experience.
 

Preferred Qualifications

1. Prefers knowledge of professional and practices of an engineering field to perform a variety of basic engineering methods, theories and practices.
2. Prefers experience in collecting samples various soil and ground water samples at work sites.

• regulates the mining industry throughout the State of Illinois

• regulates the possession, use, and storage of explosives,

• and enforces various acts which govern the mining industry

In addition, the office is charged with ensuring the health and safety of the thousands of mine workers through the Mine Safety and Training Division, and through administering the Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation program, provides reclamation ensuring public and environmental safety from abandoned mine sites.
