Airshed and Watershed Stewardship Branch
The Airshed and Watershed Stewardship Branch (AWSB) is responsible for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on key air, water, land and biodiversity indicators. AWSB has a legislated requirement to make data, scientific evaluation and assessments available to the public in a timely manner. AWSB produces a robust line of science products addressing the needs of a variety of end users (government, industry, academia, Indigenous communities, and the general public). The line of science products range from legislated products such as the State of the Environment Reports to real-time data and peer reviewed scientific papers.

Role Responsibilities
AWSB is searching for a Water Monitoring Technologist (Groundwater), to join their monitoring team to carry out ambient monitoring activities and programs.
The Water Monitoring Technologist will conduct monitoring activities within divisional and departmental plans with a mandate to collect accurate data related to the ambient Groundwater sampling programs. This will include using various equipment and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) associated with Groundwater quality and quantity.
Responsibilities include:
• Assisting with all areas of ambient data gathering.
• Carrying out Groundwater sampling programs (water quality) and level measurements (quantity) using SOPs.
• Undertaking Project-Level planning and resources tracking.
• Validating, processing and entering data.
• Responding to Environmental spill situations and environmental emergencies on Alberta waters.

Qualifications
Requirements:
• Two-year technical diploma in Groundwater related disciplines, plus a minimum of four (4) years related field and office experience undertaking all aspects of water level and water quality monitoring.
• Certification in the following safety areas is an asset, or will be required to be completed within the first 2 years of employment: Standard First Aid, Defensive Driver, Collision Avoidance, Trailering, WHMIS, TDG, Wildlife Awareness, Swift Water, Ice Rescue and Boat training.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
Equivalencies:
• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
• Familiarity with instrumentation and software/ applications used in the Groundwater discipline, including experience with hydrogeology, well drilling, inspection, testing, using instrumentation, sensors. data loggers and pumps, conducting data verification and validation for time series water level and water quality data.
• The ability and experience driving large trucks, hauling large specialized trailers and operating other specialized vehicles (e.g. ATV, Argo).
• Outdoor and field experience is preferred: basic outdoor survival skills; ability to perform physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging work in all environmental conditions over extended periods; intermediate/advanced navigational skills (use of map & compass and/or basic GPS).
• Knowledge of small engine operation/maintenance and electronics would be an advantage.
• Strong organizational and time management/prioritization skills is preferred, as there are numerous responsibilities and the need to adapt quickly to changing work plans.

Please Note: This is a permanent full time position located in Calgary.
About Your Work Environment
In this role, you will be working in an office setting located in Calgary. However, you will be primarily working in the field and be required to travel to remote areas under a wide range of conditions sometimes using 4X4 trucks, snowmobiles, ATV’s, Argos, and trailers. A valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) is required to operate specialized vehicles (e.g. ATVs). The successful candidate will be required to provide a driver’s abstract.
Our Groundwater team occasionally assist other monitoring disciplines that might require travel in helicopters and as such, you must be comfortable with flights and heights. This position will require you to work outside in adverse weather and road conditions. Long hours and/or weekend work may become necessary in the field at any time and therefore flexibility is essential.
