Are you educated to degree level or above in a catchment science or related discipline? If so, we have a great opportunity for you in our Catchment Delivery Team.

The Wessex Water Catchment Delivery Team works with farmers and landowners in catchments within the Wessex region to reduce the impact of agriculture upon raw water quality. The team has been delivering catchment management for nearly 15 years and has a reputation as one of the best catchment management teams in the industry.

What will you be doing?
This role will see you working with other scientists and catchment advisors in the development of catchment management schemes; keeping informed of developments in the wider industry and academic community to incorporate new knowledge, mitigation measures and ways of working into our schemes. The team fosters an environment where new ideas and innovation are welcomed and encouraged. Where gaps in knowledge exist, there will be opportunity to plan and deliver field trials.

The successful candidate will be involved in the development of robust field monitoring programmes to demonstrate and improve understanding of the impact of catchment delivery measures on ground and surface water quality.

There will be plenty of opportunity to get out into the field to collect data, both on foot or in one of our all-terrain vehicles. Day to day you will collate, analyse and report catchment management derived data to explain the results of catchment management within ground and surface drinking water catchments for pesticides and nutrients, as well as wider river basin catchment management schemes. You will need to ensure that data collected is quality assured, robust, and presentable to a wide range of both internal and external audiences.

What are the requirements?
To succeed in this role, you will have a sound scientific approach. An appreciation of environmental science, soil science, hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, treatment processes, nutrient and pesticide cycling, water management, wetland science and/or agriculture will provide candidates with an excellent advantage.

Our catchment scientist will have experience in the preparation of clear, thorough and coherent scientific reports and be confident in verbal presentation. An understanding of the principles behind the design of field data collection and statistical analysis are key skills, as are strong IT skills - Microsoft Excel proficiency is an essential. Experience of GIS packages and/or environmental modelling and coding will be highly desirable but not essential.

Knowledge of the Water Framework Directive, drinking water regulations and other relevant legislation will provide the successful candidate with a good understanding of the context of our work. Ability to work independently and with others within a multidisciplinary team is essential, as well as being able to represent Wessex Water’s interests in meeting and at conferences.

Due to the large area of our schemes cover, you will be required to hold a valid UK driving licence.
