Provides lead hydrologic direction and support for statewide mining projects through the Large Mine Permitting Team. Make appropriate recommendations to management based on expertise to identify, use and properly manage the water resources of the state. Interact directly with the public for assessment of water resource issues, advise other state employees as well as the public on the use and interpretation of hydrologic data. Assist the Alaska Hydrologic Survey to maintain water use, well log. and groundwater monitoring databases as required. The incumbent must have the ability to work independently, efficiently, and effectively with minimal supervision.

As the Northern Region Hydrologist for DNR, you will interact with a wide variety of state and federal agencies. You will be a part of the Alaska Hydrologic Survey and interact with other state and federal agencies as well as units within ADNR/DMLW including Water Management, Dam Safety, Survey, Navigability, and Statewide Abatement of Impaired Land (SAIL) units to provide supporting hydrologic analysis and expertise as needed.
 
This position is in the Northern Regional office co-located with other ADNR Divisions on Airport Way in Fairbanks, AK. The daily work is collaborative and quiet, but also widely variable depending on the workload. You will conduct field work, mainly during the ice-free months, to assess water resource issues or measure groundwater levels or stream flows. You will interact with other sections and staff daily.  The option for teleworking is available after a probationary period. The work is fast paced, with support from an experienced team of water resource professionals and hydrologists.
 

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and Competencies
 

We are seeking an individual with the following desired knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and Competencies:

• Considerable knowledge of hydrology and/or geology this includes the principles and practices such as understanding and applying the hydrologic cycle; mapping groundwater and surface water systems; developing, interpreting, and understanding geologic profiles; aquifer identification, testing, and analysis; interpreting and understanding well and stream hydraulics; or applying the concepts of geochemistry to water quality issues.
• Considerable knowledge data collection techniques and procedures, instrumentation, and site assessments as applied to hydrologic projects.
• Working knowledge of contaminants and their transport pathways and processes as related to water resources and water quality. 
• Skill in using and applying geographic information systems and other software/hardware appropriate to the level and type of project or task. 
• Skill in reading and interpreting engineering plans, maps, aerial photographs, and/or satellite images.
• Skill in reviewing and commenting on permit applications as they pertain to water resources.
   

AND

Two years of journey professional level experience in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, or geohydrology.  

Substitution:

Master's degree from an accredited college in hydrology, hydrogeology, geohydrology, or a closely related field will substitute for one year of journey professional work experience.

Special Note:

Degrees in the natural or physical sciences include specialties such as biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, geology, mathematics, etcetera.
