Job description  

We are looking for an experienced hydrologist with strong technical leadership to join our Cumbria and Lancashire Hydrology team.

As Technical Specialist you will:
• Support, coach and mentor the hydrologists in the team
• Support the team leader in determining technical direction and priorities
• Manage and provide specialist advice on projects and programmes
• Carry out complex water resources hydrology work
• Manage the technical work of the team

The team investigate, monitor and model medium and low flows in the river. This plays a critical role in decision making for water resources issues and their impact on the environment. Working in the team you will provide technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management activities, including:
• Drought incident management
• Quality assessment of river flow data and gauging station network review
• Hydrological assessment for catchment abstraction management
• Restoring sustainable abstraction investigations
• Hydrological assessment for Water Framework Directive
• Appraisal of water company management plans

The team  

The post is in the Cumbria & Lancashire Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land team. The team's hydrologists are based in the Warrington office. They work closely with many internal teams and also with external customers and partners. These include water companies, consultants, catchment groups, developers, Rivers Trusts, Natural England and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.

Experience/skills required  

Academic qualifications of minimum degree level (or equivalent), ideally MSc in Hydrology or equivalent in a relevant environmental discipline (Geography, Environmental Sciences or Civil Engineering)
Significant experience in water resources hydrology (minimum five years)
Ability to analyse complex hydrological problems and review modelling techniques
In depth technical knowledge of data collation, interpretation, processing and quality analysis
Record of innovation leading to improvements in the delivery of hydrological advice and analysis
Leads and promotes the technical development of team members through inspirational mentoring and scientific integrity
Develops plans, identifies and delivers tasks that balance the priorities of immediate and future environmental and business risks
Develops and maintains good relationships with internal and external customers
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential
