Job Description:

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University invites applications for a Research Specialist 2 in the Center for River Studies (CRS). This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation and maintenance of CRS Lower Mississippi River Physical Model equipment supplies and facilities. This person will report to the CRS Director.

LSU is designated as the Flagship University in the state of Louisiana, has a total enrollment of more than 30,000 students, and is the only public university in the state to be designated a Carnegie Research I University. The LSU College of Engineering has experienced significant enrollment increases in recent years and has recently occupied the 400,000 square foot Patrick F Taylor building, one the nation’s largest buildings dedicated to engineering education. LSU is located in Baton Rouge which has a metropolitan-area population of more than 800,000. The university’s location, within one of the world’s largest petrochemical corridors and in close proximity to the Mississippi River and its dynamic delta, provides significant opportunities for environmental engineering research. Current strengths of the department include biological waste treatment processes, chemical fate and transport, energy-sustainable electrochemical systems for remediation or power generation, environmental system photochemistry, groundwater hydrology and hydraulics, and coastal engineering. The LSU Center for River Studies (CRS), a collaboration with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, is an ~$18M, 45,000 sq. ft. research and education facility located on the Baton Rouge Water Campus. The CRS houses a mobile bed, physical scale model of the lower ~190 miles of the Mississippi River, a 2nd ~3800 sq. ft. hydraulics lab, and an ~8000 sq. ft. outreach and exhibit space.

This position will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Center equipment and facilities. The chosen candidate will manage and collaborate with LSU graduate and undergraduate students, will be responsible for purchasing, organizing and keeping inventory of equipment, as well as maintain control and measurement equipment per procedure.

Job Responsibilities

50% Overall responsible for operation and maintenance of the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model (LMRPM). Works closely with LSU graduate and undergraduate students in terms of model operations, model maintenance, student schedules, lab training & safety procedures/programs, etc. Day-to-day oversight of operations, maintenance, data collection & analysis, maintenance, etc.

20% Maintains control and measurement equipment per procedures. Ensures maintenance of calibration records for all electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic test equipment of work area. Assemble, program, test, troubleshoot and operate a variety of scientific apparatuses as well as data acquisition and control systems.

15% Coordinates and works closely with CPRA Staff, CPRA contractors and LSU contractors related to upgrades to the physical model; modifications to the physical model; scheduled operation and maintenance work; etc. Design, fabricate and install instrumentation fixtures and brackets; design, assemble, install and support hydraulic application systems; and operate and maintain equipment (forklift, CNC router, overhead crane).

15% Ensure all equipment is organized and maintained in working order.  Responsible for purchasing equipment and supplies as well as organizing and keeping track of existing inventory. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 3 years of related experience. Four years of related experience will substitute for the Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

-Specific experience: Prior experience in electronics, programming and control systems (e.g., LabView). Professional engineering consulting or higher educational research environment. Hands-on craftsman experience with CNC router, including  CAD (3-d design) & CAM (generation of toolpaths/exporting G-Code) software.
