The role

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join an industry-leading Water Systems Engineering project as the KTP Associate on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Exeter and Datatecnics Corporation. It includes a £6k training budget and 10% of your working time dedicated to personal development.

The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Exeter and will be based at the company premises in Manchester, with regular travel between Exeter and Manchester. 

This project aims to develop a new approach to monitoring water assets and predicting water pipe failures by developing a digital construction of network assets in an integrated manner, through the development of experimental and numerical models of the soil-pipe system and querying of multi-parameter live and historical datasets. Within Datatecnics, the Modelling Engineer will be working alongside the data science, civil and electronics engineering teams, and reporting directly to senior management. The role of the Modelling Engineer will be to lead this strategic project, working alongside Datatecnics and leading academics at the University of Exeter to develop and embed the ability to interpret unique, novel data received from Datatecnics’ sensors to predict pipe failures and forecast asset lifetimes. The successful applicant will develop both industrial and research skills for their future career, utilising the skills and knowledge of company supervisors, as well as benefitting from continuous academic support.

About you

Applicants will have a PhD or will be about to finish their PhD in Engineering or a related subject (for Grade F), with a good working knowledge and significant experience of data analytics and numerical, statistical and experimental modelling. They must also be a self-starter, have confidence in their own abilities, be happy to work alone and as part of a small team and have excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in computer programming is essential (Python or R would be desirable).

The Associate must have an aptitude for, and show an interest in, the commercial aspects of the work being undertaken, as they will be not only be conducting, but leading, meetings with Datatecnics customers’ engineering and operations teams. Candidates must, therefore, be able to demonstrate an understanding of customer requirements and eventual market uptake.
