Our Flood and Water Management Group is looking for a statistician to join our friendly and inclusive team.

We have projects in hydrological and hydrodynamic modelling for river and drainage systems, sustainable drainage, climate change impact analysis and resilience, satellite data applications, statistical modelling and numerical emulators, and water resources management planning.  We use state-of-the-art software, build new tools and web applications, develop frameworks and write guidance. 

You will be part of a team providing technical statistical support across all of our sectors, including flood and water resource management, coastal and estuarine processes, port and harbour engineering, and health organisations.   

About the role

Your role involves supporting research, development and application of advanced methods in extreme value models, spatio-temporal epidemic models, or statistical emulation of complex numerical models.  The position involves working with academic and industrial partners. 

About you

You will have:

  • an undergraduate or master's degree in a relevant subject with a significant statistical component,
  • up to 5 years of professional industry or academic research experience,
  • good knowledge in at least one of these fields – extreme value theory, spatio-temporal epidemic models, and statistical emulators,
  • proficient programming skills in R or Python,
  • willingness to engage and collaborate with engineers and scientist from a variety of backgrounds, and
  • good attention to detail, record keeping, presentation and report writing skills.

The following qualifications and experiences are desirable:

  • PhD in statistics with publication in peer reviewed journals,
  • application of extreme value theory in large-scale probabilistic flood models or weather-related catastrophe models,
  • web application development with R Shiny or Django,
  • Python / R package development and maintenance, and
  • knowledge of relational databases.
